Hymn · Evening

Day Is Dying in the West

Words by Mary Artemisia Lathbury, 18774 verses

Day is dying in the west,Heaven is touching earth with rest;Wait and worship while the nightSets her evening lamps alightThro' all the sky.

Refrain, after each verseHoly, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts!Heaven and earth are full of thee,Heaven and earth are praising thee,O Lord most high!

Lord of life, beneath the domeOf the universe, thy home,Gather us who seek thy faceTo the fold of thy embrace,For thou art nigh.

While the deep'ning shadows fall,Heart of Love, enfolding all,Thro' the glory and the graceOf the stars that veil thy face,Our hearts ascend.

When forever from our sightPass the stars, the day, the night,Lord of angels, on our eyesLet eternal morning rise,And shadows end.
