Morning prayer · 17 April

Rest on your word

A small bed is tucked into a quiet nook with the blanket turned down, a single open book resting on the pillow where a head would rest, suggesting rest found in words rather than sleep itself.

Lord, give us grace to rest on your word, to rest in hope until we see your face, to rest through our work, calm and undisturbed. Lord, give us grace. The burden and the heat of the day are wearing on fast. Night is coming, when something sweeter than a bird singing at night will fill the silence at the end of our race: songs no human ear has ever heard or can hear, songs of the quiet place where rest is waiting. Lord, satisfy the hope we’ve waited so long for. Lord, give us grace.

There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God.
