When we wake up

A small night-light being switched off at dawn while a quiet sentry bird perches alert on the windowsill outside, guarding the threshold as the day begins.

When we wake, merciful God, we’re still with you, and your hand is over us for good. Be what our hearts long for, and the ruler of our thoughts. Father, we need your love, and your calm breath poured into our souls, to be a spring of strength. Without you, we don’t know what today may bring, whether danger, temptation or sorrow. But you can put a guard around our path, and keep all our senses from temptation by steadying them with deep respect for you. Give us a right sense of duty, to shield us in every struggle and guard us from sin and death. Lead us not into temptation, or when we’re tempted, rescue us from evil by keeping us humble and alert. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

If I were to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand; and when I awake, I am still with You.
