Morning prayer · 17 July

Search us with candles

A single lit candle is held close to a plain wall, its flame illuminating cracks and cobwebbed corners that were invisible in the dark, searching them out one by one.

Father, today we ask you to finish your work in our hearts. We’re saved, but we want to be saved from sin of every kind and size, even hidden sins we hardly know are there. If we have any pride we don’t notice, any unbelief we’re not aware of, if we’re clinging to something you made as if it were God, please, Lord, search us as if with candles until you find the evil, and then take it away. We’re not content just to be forgiven: create a clean heart in us, God, and give us a new and right spirit. Help us at home and at work, with other people and in your church. Make us true, honest and pure, kept from great wrongs by being kept from small ones. Amen.

See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.
