Morning prayer · 18 July

Many thoughts, great fears

A small rowboat is tossed by choppy dark waves crowding in from every side, while a single sturdy rope leads up and out of the frame to an unseen anchor point, taut and holding firm.

Lord my God, don’t be far from me. My God, hurry to help me, because many thoughts and great fears have risen up against me and trouble my soul. How will I get through them unhurt? How will I break through them? Lord, do what you’ve said you’ll do, and let every evil thought run away from your face. This is my hope and my only comfort: to run to you in every trouble, to trust you, to call on you from my heart, and to wait patiently for your loving kindness. Amen.

When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.
