Morning prayer · 22 June

To see this morning

An old ox stands hitched to a plow at first light, head bowed and patient, having pulled the same furrow every day of its long life without complaint.

Lord, help us lift up our hearts to you. Let your Holy Spirit help us where we’re weak, so that we don’t just use the posture and words of prayer, but worship you in spirit and in truth. We always depend on your goodness. In you we live and move and exist. You first brought us into being. You held us up when we were helpless babies and through our childish early years. You put up with us through our careless youth. You’ve carried us through every stage of life, through many changes and dangers, to see the light of this morning. Help us look to you as the giver of every blessing, and thank you for your patient goodness, which has kept giving us good for evil. Amen.

Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you.
