Morning prayer · 25 September

A blessing to others

A candle is handed from one small lantern to light an unlit one beside it, the flame undiminished by giving itself away, showing blessing passed on without loss to the one who gives it.

God, your name is Love, and you never ignore your needy children’s cry. Listen to my prayer this morning. Make today a day of blessing for me, and make me a blessing to others. Keep all evil away from me, open wrongdoing and secret sin. Help me control my temper and stop the first stirrings of anger or sulking. If I meet unkindness or bad treatment, give me the love that is patient and bears everything. Make me kind and gentle to everyone, loving even people who don’t love me. Let me live today as if it were my last. My God, show me the path you want me to follow. Let me take no step without you, and go nowhere unless you go with me. Amen.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
