Morning prayer · 14 February

Step by step

A single pair of worn boots stands by the door at dawn, laces loose and ready, ready to step out into a new day, with the words “step by step” lettered by hand.

Thank you, Jesus Christ, for bringing me up from last night into the glad light of this day, to win life that lasts forever for my soul through the blood you shed for me. Praise be to you, God, forever, for the blessings you’ve given me: my food, my speech, my work, my health. Please shield me from sin, shield me from harm, and bless and keep me tonight. I’m low and poor, God of the poor. Christ of the wounds, give me wisdom along with your grace. Holy One, claim me as yours. Protect me on sea and on land, and lead me on, step by step, to the peace of the city that lasts forever. Amen.

The steps of a man are ordered by the LORD who takes delight in his journey.
