Morning prayer · 2 October

Shadow of a great rock

A small tired animal lies down in the deep cool shadow cast by an enormous rock in an open sunlit field, utterly at rest.

Lord, you are like the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. You see us, your weak creatures: tired of working, tired of pleasure, tired of hoping for things that never seem to come, tired of ourselves. In your great compassion, and with a tenderness deeper than words, please bring us into your rest. Amen.

Each will be like a shelter from the wind, a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in a dry land, like the shadow of a great rock in an arid land.
