Morning prayer · 21 October

Wheat feels the dawn

A single stalk of wheat on a dark hillside, bending toward a thin band of dawn light at the horizon though the sun itself is still hidden below it.

Lord God, in you alone our trust and peace, our love and our longing, glow bright with hope. Lift us above this short life on earth, above pleasures that start and stop, this moon that wanes and these seasons that fade. We turn to you, like wheat on an eastern hillside that feels the dawn under night’s lingering cover, bending and stretching to the sun before it can see it. Lord God, we can’t see yet, but we know. In love we wait with patience and longing, and loving and longing like this, we pray: your will be done on earth as in heaven today, as it was yesterday, and so tomorrow. Love offering love on a fire that love keeps burning. Amen.

My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning—more than watchmen wait for the morning.
