Morning prayer · 8 September
Your will before my bread

Lord, you’ve taught us to seek your kingdom first. So teach me to say, “Your will be done,” before I say, “Give me my daily bread.” Teach me to accept your will as the foundation of my happiness, and everything else as only what’s built on top. I’m more afraid of my body going hungry than my spirit. Convince me that it’s no gain to win the whole world and lose my own soul. Show me that only having my soul makes having the world worth anything. Teach me that nothing can give me joy unless I’m already joyful inside. Show me that life flows from within, not from outside, and lead me to find that the pleasures at your right hand are the only ones that last forever. Amen.
What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
