The flood

A world full of violence, one man who walked with God, a boat on dry ground and a year shut inside, told by the family who went in.

How Story is made

Before the flood

Moses@moses

There are people everywhere now, and the world is full of violence. God looks at it and sees it’s rotten. Everyone’s way of living has gone bad.

Moses@moses

Still the hardest line in the book to write. The LORD is sorry he ever made people. It breaks his heart.

Moses@mosesOne of the saddest lines I have to write. The LORD sees that every thought in people’s hearts is evil, all the time. He’s sorry he ever made them, and it breaks his heart. He says he’ll wipe them off the face of the earth.
Moses@moses

One man is different. Noah. He’s right with God, blameless among the people of his day. He walks with God.

Replying to @moses

“Walked with God.” Only one other person in the family tree gets that line. Enoch. Noah’s great-grandfather.

Noah@noah

Noah. Married, three grown sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. When I was born, my dad hoped I’d bring some comfort from all the hard work on this ground the LORD cursed.

The warning

Noah@noah

God spoke to me. He’s going to put an end to everyone. The earth is full of violence because of them.

Noah@noah

Replying to @noah

Then he told me to build a boat.

Noah@noah

The plans, since everyone keeps asking. 1. Gopher wood. 2. Rooms inside. 3. Pitch, inside and out. 4. 300 cubits long, 50 wide, 30 high. 5. A roof, with the walls finished a cubit from the top. 6. A door in the side. 7. Three decks.

Noah@noahGod told me the end was coming, because the earth was full of violence. Then he gave me the plans. Gopher wood. Pitch inside and out. Three decks, a door in the side, 300 cubits long. About 140 metres.
Japheth@japheth

Replying to @noah

300 cubits. Of boat.

Noah@noah

He said he’s bringing floodwaters on the earth. Everything that breathes will die. But he’s making a covenant with me, a binding promise. Me, my wife, our sons and their wives. We go into the ark.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

Replying to @noah

All of us. He named all of us.

Noah@noah

Two of every kind of animal as well. Every bird, every animal, everything that crawls. A male and a female, to keep them alive. And I don’t go and catch them. They’ll come to me.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noah

They’ll come to us. On their own. Sure. Why not.

Noah@noah

And food. Every kind of food we eat, stored on board, for us and for them.

Shem’s wife@shems.wife

Replying to @noah

For all of them? For how long?

Moses@moses

So Noah does it. All of it. Exactly the way God told him.

The building years

Noah’s neighbour@next.to.noahs

Right. Something massive is going up at Noah’s place. Wooden. Nobody round here has a clue what it is.

Replying to @next.to.noahs

no because it’s got a roof and a door in the side. if that’s a boat it’s the biggest boat anyone’s ever seen

Show 1 more reply
Japheth@japheth

The pitch, mate. It’s in my hair, my clothes, my bread. Inside and out, he said. Inside AND out.

Shem@shem

Room after room after room. He said rooms, so: rooms.

genuine question. who builds a boat that size, here?

Ham@ham

Replying to @passing.by

Because God told Dad to.

Noah@noah

Building for something nobody’s seen yet. But he warned me, so I’m building.

Replying to @noah

Hebrews puts it like this: he took the warning seriously, out of reverence for God, and built.

Wedding this week, y’all! Whole family’s coming. Food’s handled, wine’s handled.

Noah’s neighbour@next.to.noahs

Replying to @wedding.week

Wouldn’t miss it.

walked past noah’s again. there’s more of it every time. they are STILL going

Replying to @passing.by

Peter says God was waiting patiently the whole time that ark was being built.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

Storing food. Every kind we eat, and enough for every animal we’re told to keep alive. The store rooms are filling up.

Seven days to go

Noah@noah

The LORD spoke again. Go into the ark, you and your whole family.

Noah@noah

Replying to @noah

Seven days. Then rain. Forty days and forty nights.

Noah@noah

Updated list. Clean animals: seven pairs of each kind. Birds: seven pairs of each kind. Everything else: one pair.

Replying to @noah

Clean and unclean animals. Centuries before Moses writes down the law about which is which.

Noah@noah

Six hundred years old this year.

Noah’s neighbour@next.to.noahs

Replying to @noah

Six hundred. And he built that. Fair play.

Noah’s neighbour@next.to.noahs

This is proper strange. Animals are walking up to Noah’s boat. In pairs. Nobody’s herding them. They just turn up.

Replying to @next.to.noahs

birds too. things that crawl. literally all of it, two by two

Show 2 more replies
Shem’s wife@shems.wife

Lower deck’s full of noise now. Middle deck too.

The day the door shut

Moses@moses

Noah’s six hundredth year, the seventeenth day of the second month. Remember the date.

Still going from the wedding. For real, best week ever.

Noah’s neighbour@next.to.noahs

Noah’s whole family’s going into that boat. All of them. And the animals are going in behind them.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

We’re in. Noah, me, Shem, Ham, Japheth and the boys’ wives. Eight of us.

Noah@noah

The door’s shut. We didn’t shut it. The LORD shut us in.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noah

Nobody on this side touched it.

Jesus used this exact day to describe his coming. Eating, drinking, weddings, right up to the day Noah went in.

Matthew@matthewHe compared it to Noah’s day. People eating and drinking, getting married, right up to the day Noah went into the ark. They had no idea, until the flood came and swept them all away.
Shem@shem

Rain.

Noah@noah

Replying to @shem

Not just rain. Water’s bursting up out of the ground as well, and the sky’s pouring like someone’s opened the floodgates.

Forty days

Japheth@japheth

Rain on the roof. Day and night. Day and night.

Ham@ham

We’re moving. The ark just lifted off the ground.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

Replying to @ham

Felt that in my stomach.

Show 1 more reply
Shem’s wife@shems.wife

It hasn’t stopped. Not once.

Japheth@japheth

Forty days, forty nights. That’s what he said, and that’s what it’s been.

The waters rise

Moses@moses

The water keeps rising until every high mountain under the whole sky is covered. Fifteen cubits over the tops. About seven metres.

Moses@moses

Everything on dry land that breathes dies, people and animals alike. Only Noah is left, and those with him in the ark.

Moses@moses

And the water stays over the earth for 150 days.

On the water

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

Eight people. One boat. Every animal he sent us. That’s the world now.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noahs.wife

Just us.

Eight. Peter counts them too.

Simon Peter@simonpeterIn Noah’s day God waited patiently while the ark was being built, and eight people were brought safely through the water. That water is a picture of baptism, which saves you now. Not washing dirt off your body, but a clear conscience before God, through Jesus rising from the dead.
Shem’s wife@shems.wife

Feed the lower deck. Then the middle deck. Then the upper. Then start again.

Japheth@japheth

Day 100 on the water. Still water.

Shem@shem

Replying to @japheth

Still water.

God remembers

Moses@moses

The whole story turns on this line. God remembers Noah, and every animal in the ark with him.

Moses@mosesBut God remembers Noah.
Noah@noah

Wind. A wind is blowing over the water. It’s going down.

Moses@moses

Replying to @noah

The water under the ground stops. The floodgates of the sky close. The rain holds off. Slowly, steadily, the water goes down.

The seventh month

Ham@ham

We’ve stopped. The ark isn’t moving. We’re resting on something.

Moses@moses

Replying to @ham

The mountains of Ararat. Seventeenth day of the seventh month. Five months to the day since the rain started.

Show 1 more reply

The tenth month

Moses@moses

First day of the tenth month. The tops of the mountains can be seen.

Forty days later

Noah@noah

Opened the window I built into the ark. Sent out a raven.

Japheth@japheth

Replying to @noah

Where’s the raven?

Show 3 more replies
Noah@noah

Trying a dove. To see if the ground’s clear.

Noah@noah

Replying to @noah

She’s back. Nowhere to put her feet. Water everywhere still. I put my hand out and brought her in.

Show 1 more reply

Seven days later

Noah@noah

Waited a week. Sent the dove out again.

Shem@shem

She’s back. It’s evening and she’s back. Dad. Look what’s in her beak.

Noah@noah

Replying to @shem

An olive leaf. Fresh. Just picked.

Show 3 more replies

Seven days after that

Noah@noah

Waited another week. Sent her out again.

Shem’s wife@shems.wife

Replying to @noah

Still no dove.

New Year’s Day

Moses@moses

Noah’s six hundred and first year, the first day of the first month.

Noah@noah

Took the covering off the ark. Looked out. The ground is dry.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noah

So... we can get out now?

Show 1 more reply

Coming out

Moses@moses

Twenty-seventh day of the second month. The earth is completely dry.

Noah@noah

He said it. Out of the ark, all of you. Bring every animal out with you, so they can spread out, have young and fill the earth.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

We’re out.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noahs.wife

Ground. Actual ground. Under my feet.

Show 1 more reply
Japheth@japheth

Everything’s coming out behind us. Birds, cattle, everything that crawls. Kind by kind. Off they go in every direction.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

A year and ten days since the door shut.

The altar

Noah@noah

First thing on dry ground: an altar to the LORD. Burnt offerings from every clean animal and every clean bird.

Moses@moses

The LORD smells the offering and is pleased. He says to himself: I’m never going to curse the ground because of people again, even though they lean towards evil from childhood. And I’ll never again wipe out every living thing like this.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

As long as the earth lasts: planting and harvest. Cold and heat. Summer and winter. Day and night. They won’t stop.

The promise

Noah@noah

God blessed us today, me and the boys. Have children, lots of them, and fill the earth.

Ham@ham

Replying to @noah

Also, apparently we can eat meat now.

Show 1 more reply
Noah@noah

He was serious about this part. He’ll hold everyone to account for a human life. If anyone sheds a person’s blood, people will shed his. Because God made people in his own image.

Replying to @noah

“In his own image.” Straight back to the first page.

Noah@noah

Then the covenant he promised me before any of this. With us, with our children after us, and with every animal that came out of the ark. A flood will never wipe out all life on the earth again.

Noah’s wife@noahs.wife

Replying to @noah

Every animal. Even the raven.

Show 1 more reply

The rainbow

Noah@noah

And the sign of it: his rainbow in the clouds. Whenever clouds come over the earth and the bow shows up, he’ll see it and remember his promise. To us, and to every living thing.

Japheth@japheth

Replying to @noah

Every time the clouds come over now, I’ll be looking for it.

Moses@moses

The last word God gives Noah on it: this is the sign of the promise between me and every creature on the earth.

Centuries later, Isaiah hears God swear by this day. As sure as the flood won’t come back, that’s how sure his love is.

Isaiah@isaiahFor a moment he turned away from you. With huge compassion he’ll bring you back. To him this is like Noah’s day: he swore the flood would never cover the earth again, and now he’s sworn he won’t be angry with you. The mountains may move and the hills may shake, but his love for you won’t.

From Noah’s three sons, the whole earth filled up again. Ten generations later, God calls a man named Abram. His great-grandson is Joseph.
