The night they left

From the last warning to the morning on the far side of the sea, told by the Israelites and Egyptians who were there.

How Story is made

After nine plagues

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour · Egypt

Nothing green left anywhere since the locusts. Then three days of darkness so thick you could feel it. And the Hebrews next door had light in their houses the whole time.

Replying to @egypt.neighbour

We did. Sorry.

Pharaoh@pharaoh

I have instructed the Hebrew to get out of my sight and never show his face here again. He agreed. Rather readily.

The last warning

Moses@moses · Egypt

Nine plagues, and Pharaoh’s still saying no. The LORD says there’s one more. After this one he won’t just let us go. He’ll drive us out.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @moses

What’s the tenth?

Show 3 more replies
Aaron@aaron

Every single sign, done right there in front of Pharaoh, in his own court, in full view of everyone. And every single time, he said no.

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt · Pharaoh’s court

Kindly note the Hebrew’s parting words to this court: that we would all come and bow down to him and beg him to leave. He then turned round and walked out.

Replying to @pharaohscourt

He’s been right nine times.

Show 1 more reply

Honest opinion, and I work at court. People here think a lot of Moses. The officials, ordinary people, everyone. Nine plagues will do that.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder · Goshen

The line I can’t stop thinking about. Among us, he said, not even a dog will growl. So Egypt knows the LORD treats Egypt and Israel differently.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @israelite.elder

He already has. The flies, the hail, the darkness. None of it touched Goshen.

The Israelites@theisraelites

New one from Moses. Everyone, men and women, is to ask their Egyptian neighbours for silver and gold. Ask them. For gold.

Replying to @theisraelites

Funny thing is, they might. The Egyptians round here have been kind to us lately.

A new year

Moses@moses

New calendar. The LORD says this month is the first month of our year from now on.

Replying to @moses

Year one.

The tenth of the month

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder · Goshen

Every household picks a lamb today. A male, a year old, nothing wrong with it. Sheep or goat, either’s fine. Keep it until the fourteenth.

Replying to @israelite.elder

It’s just the two of us, so we’re going halves on one with next door. You work it out by how many are eating.

Show 1 more reply

Found ours. Went over every bit of it. Not a mark on it.

The fourteenth, at twilight

The Israelites@theisraelites

Twilight. Every family in Israel at the same moment. The lambs are killed.

A bunch of hyssop, dipped in the bowl. Blood brushed across the top of the doorframe and down both sides. Done.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @goshen.mum

And nobody goes out of that door until morning. Nobody.

Show 1 more reply
Moses@moses

People keep asking why the blood. The LORD said when he sees it, he’ll pass over that house and won’t let the destroyer in. That’s why tonight is called the Passover.

Replying to @moses

And the houses without it?

Show 1 more reply

Passover night

Tonight’s dinner: the lamb, roasted whole over the fire. Flat bread, no yeast. Bitter herbs. Eaten fast, dressed to travel, sandals on, a staff in every hand. Like we’re leaving any minute.

Replying to @goshen.mum

Anything left over gets burned before morning. None of it’s kept.

The Israelites@theisraelites · Goshen

Every house in Goshen smells of roast lamb tonight. Every door has blood on it.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Born a slave in Egypt. Tonight I’m eating my dinner with my sandals on and my staff in my hand.

Moses@moses

One day your kids will ask what this meal is about. Tell them it’s the LORD’s Passover. He passed over our houses in Egypt and spared us.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @moses

We bowed down right there when he told us. Then everyone went and did exactly what he said.

Moses@moses

And we keep this night every year from now on. For good.

Midnight

Moses@moses

Midnight. The LORD struck down every firstborn in Egypt. From Pharaoh’s own firstborn to the son of the prisoner in the dungeon.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Every Egyptian house on our street. There isn’t an Egyptian house anywhere without someone dead.

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt · Pharaoh’s palace

The whole palace is up. The king, all of us. His firstborn too.

The Israelites@theisraelites · Goshen

We’re all inside with the doors shut, like we were told. We can hear the crying. All over Egypt.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @theisraelites

Not one of our houses was touched.

Still night

Sent out in the dark to find Moses and Aaron. The king wants them. Tonight.

Aaron@aaron

Pharaoh’s answer, in the middle of the night. Get up and go, you and all the Israelites. Go and worship the LORD, like you asked. Take your flocks and herds. And bless me too.

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt

Replying to @aaron

We had advised him to let them go before the locusts.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Go. Please. Just go, or we’re all going to die.

Replying to @egypt.neighbour

Everyone’s saying it. Get them out, quickly.

No time for anything. The dough hasn’t even risen. It’s in the kneading bowl, wrapped in a cloak, up on my shoulder.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @goshen.mum

Same in every house.

Asked the woman next door for silver and gold, like Moses said. She gave me gold. And a cloak.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Replying to @goshen.mum

Take it. Take whatever you want. Just go.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Abraham was told his family would be slaves in a land that wasn’t theirs, and would come out with great possessions. We’re carrying Egypt’s silver and gold out of the door.

Abraham@abrahamHe told me my descendants would be slaves in a land that isn’t theirs for 400 years, and then come out. After dark, a smoking firepot and a blazing torch passed between the pieces. Only the fire went through.
Moses@moses

The LORD made the Egyptians generous to us. Whatever we asked for, they gave. That’s how we plundered Egypt. We asked.

Leaving Rameses

The Israelites@theisraelites · Rameses

Out of Rameses, heading for Succoth. On foot. Around 600,000 men, plus the women and children. Plus the flocks and the herds. It’s a lot of people.

Replying to @theisraelites

Watching them go past. It just doesn’t end.

Show 1 more reply

Not an Israelite. Going anyway. Lowkey there’s a whole crowd of us who aren’t.

Replying to @mixedcrowd

Keep up, then.

An Egyptian neighbour@egypt.neighbour

Next door’s empty.

Moses@moses

Four hundred and thirty years in Egypt. To the very day. And we walk out.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

The LORD kept watch all night to bring us out. So every year, on this night, we keep watch for him.

Moses@moses

We’ve got Joseph’s bones with us. He made his family swear to it before he died. We kept it.

Joseph@joseph.son.of.jacob · EgyptI’m about to die. But God will definitely come for you and take you up out of this land, to the land he promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. When he does, carry my bones up from here.
An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @moses

He said God would come for us. He came.

Succoth

The Israelites@theisraelites · Succoth

First bread out of Egypt. The dough we grabbed, baked flat. No yeast, no time, and nobody had packed any food.

Replying to @theisraelites

Still counts as bread.

Show 1 more reply
Moses@moses

Remember this day. The day you came out of Egypt, out of slavery. The LORD brought you out with his own strong hand.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

Every year, seven days of bread with no yeast. And when your son asks why, you tell him: because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.

Moses@moses

From now on every firstborn son among us belongs to the LORD. We buy each one back.

The long way round

Genuine question. Why aren’t we going up the coast road? It’s shorter.

Moses@moses

Replying to @justthetwoofus

Philistine country. God said if they run into a war, they might change their minds and go back to Egypt.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Marching out in ranks, like an army. None of us has ever been an army.

Etham, where the desert starts

An Israelite mother in Goshen@goshen.mum · Etham

Camped at Etham, right on the edge of the desert. And there’s a pillar of cloud in front of us. It moves, we move.

Replying to @goshen.mum

Wait. What is that?

Show 1 more reply
The Israelites@theisraelites

At night it turns to fire. You can walk in the dark by it.

Replying to @theisraelites

So we can keep going after dark. Handy.

Moses@moses

Cloud by day, fire by night. It hasn’t left the front of the column once.

Turn back

Moses@moses

New instruction from the LORD. Turn back and camp by the sea, at Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the water.

Replying to @moses

Turn back? And camp with the sea behind us?

Show 3 more replies

In Egypt

A messenger at Pharaoh’s palace@palace.runner · Pharaoh’s palace

Me again. Guess who had to tell the king. They’re not coming back. They’ve legged it.

Pharaoh@pharaoh

What have we done? We have let Israel go. Who is going to serve us now?

Pharaoh’s officials@pharaohscourt

Replying to @pharaoh

The court is asking the same question.

Show 1 more reply
An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

The king’s had his own chariot got ready. Six hundred of the best chariots, plus every other chariot in Egypt, officers on every one. We’re going after them.

An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

Replying to @egypt.charioteer

Word is they didn’t sneak off. Marched out with their heads up, apparently.

By the sea

An Israelite at the back of the camp@backofthecamp · By the sea, near Pi-hahiroth

Something on the horizon behind us. Dust. Horses. Chariots. It’s Egypt.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @backofthecamp

Everyone’s crying out to the LORD.

Show 1 more reply
An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

Caught them up. They’re camped by the sea near Pi-hahiroth. Nowhere left to go.

Weren’t there enough graves in Egypt? Is that why Moses brought us all the way out here to die? What has he done to us?

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @israelite.redsea

We told him back in Egypt. Leave us alone and let us work for the Egyptians. Better slaves than dead in the desert.

Show 3 more replies
Moses@moses

Told everyone to be still. Then I cried out to the LORD myself. He said: why are you crying out to me? Tell them to move.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

Lift your staff, he said. Stretch your hand out over the sea and split it, and they’ll walk through on dry ground.

Show 1 more reply

That night

The cloud’s moved. It’s been out in front of us the whole way. Now it’s come round behind us, and it’s standing between us and them.

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

Replying to @backofthecamp

The angel of God that’s been leading us has gone to the back as well.

Show 1 more reply
An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

There’s a cloud between us and them. Nobody’s getting near anybody tonight.

Moses@moses

Stretched my hand out over the sea.

The wind. A strong east wind, all night long. It’s driving the sea back.

The Israelites@theisraelites

The sea has split. There’s a way through the middle. Dry ground.

Replying to @theisraelites

Dry. Not mud. Dry.

Show 1 more reply
Miriam@miriam

Walls of water. One on the right, one on the left. And we’re walking between them.

Replying to @miriam

Kneading bowl still on my shoulder.

Before dawn

An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

They’ve gone into the sea on some kind of path. We’re going in after them. All of us. Horses, chariots, drivers.

They’ve followed us into the sea.

An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

Something’s wrong. The whole army’s in a panic. The wheels keep jamming. You can barely drive.

An Egyptian charioteer@egypt.charioteer

Replying to @egypt.charioteer

Everyone’s shouting the same thing. Get away from the Israelites. The LORD is fighting for them against Egypt.

The Israelites@theisraelites

The pillar of fire and cloud is right over their army.

Daybreak

Moses@moses

The LORD told me to stretch my hand out over the sea again. I did. At daybreak the water went back to where it belongs. They were trying to turn round.

Moses@moses

Replying to @moses

The water covered the chariots and the horsemen, the whole army that followed us in. Not one of them survived.

We walked right through the middle of the sea on dry ground. All of us.

The Israelites@theisraelites

The sea’s back where it was. And the Egyptians who chased us are lying dead on the shore.

Morning, on the far shore

An elder of Israel@israelite.elder

That day the LORD saved Israel from Egypt. We saw his power with our own eyes. We’re in awe of him now. We trust him. And we trust his servant Moses.

Replying to @israelite.elder

I said we’d die out here. I was wrong.

Show 1 more reply
Miriam@miriam

The baby I watched in a basket in the reeds. Last night he held his hand out over the sea, and it split.

Miriam@miriamI stood a little way off. I had to see what would happen to him.

On the far shore, Miriam picked up her tambourine. The song they sang is Exodus 15.
