The last week

From the plot against him to the empty tomb and beyond, as it happened, by the people who were there.

How Story is made

Passover week, Jerusalem

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local · Jerusalem

Catching up? This was yesterday. Passover’s days away, the city’s rammed, and everyone’s talking about Jesus, the teacher from Galilee who raised Lazarus in Bethany. The chief priests want him arrested.

Someone in Jerusalem@jerusalem.local · JerusalemThe whole city’s in uproar. Everyone on my street is asking the same thing. Who is this?

In the temple that week

Someone serving in the temple@temple.courts · The temple

No because he’s just thrown the traders out of the temple courts. Tables over, coins everywhere, the dove sellers’ benches knocked flying. Said this is meant to be a house of prayer for all nations and they’ve turned it into a den of robbers.

Replying to @temple.courts

The chief priests are livid. But they can’t touch him. The crowds hang on his every word.

Up at dawn to hear him teach in the temple. For real, he’s there all day, every day. Nights he goes out to the Mount of Olives.

Wednesday

Matthew@matthew

He told us plainly today. Passover’s in two days, and he’s going to be handed over and crucified.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @matthew

He keeps saying things like this. None of us really get what he means, and nobody wants to be the one to ask.

Someone serving at Caiaphas’s house@caiaphas.household · Caiaphas’s house

Big meeting at the high priest’s tonight. Caiaphas, the chief priests, the elders, the lot. It’s about the teacher from Galilee. They want to arrest him on the quiet and have him killed.

Replying to @caiaphas.household

Not during the festival, though. They’re worried the people will riot.

Show 1 more reply

Well, that’s their problem solved. One of the Galilean’s own twelve came in today. Judas, he’s called. Asked the chief priests what they’d give him to hand him over.

Replying to @caiaphas.household

They were delighted. Thirty silver coins, counted out on the table.

Thursday

Today’s the day the Passover lambs are killed. Keep that in mind.

Moses@mosesEvery household: a lamb. Its blood on the doorframe. Eat it that night with sandals on and staff in hand, ready to leave. It’s the LORD’s Passover.
The believers@thebelievers

Where are we even eating the Passover this year? Asked him where he wants us to get it ready.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @thebelievers

Peter and I are being sent into the city. Instructions: follow a man carrying a jar of water. That’s it. That’s the plan.

Thursday evening

John@johnzebedee · The upstairs room

All of us round the table. The first thing he says: he’s really wanted to eat this Passover with us before he suffers.

John@johnzebedee

He got up in the middle of dinner, took off his outer clothes, wrapped a towel round his waist, and started washing our feet. That’s a servant’s job.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @johnzebedee

I told him no chance, you’re never washing my feet. He said then I’ve got no part with him. Right. Not just my feet, then. Hands and head as well.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

He just said one of us at this table is going to betray him.

The believers@thebelievers

Replying to @simonpeter

Everyone going round the table. It’s not me, is it?

Thomas@thomasthetwin

Judas just got up and walked out in the middle of dinner.

Philip@philip

Replying to @thomasthetwin

He’s got the money bag. Probably gone to grab stuff for the feast.

Matthew@matthew

He took bread, thanked God, broke it and passed it round. Said it’s his body, given for us, and to do this to remember him. Then the cup. His blood of the covenant, he said, poured out for many, so sins can be forgiven. A covenant is God’s binding promise. This one’s sealed with his blood.

The believers@thebelievers

And then, the same night, we got into an argument about which of us is the greatest. Yes. That night.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @thebelievers

He said the greatest should be like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves. And he’s among us as the one who serves. He’d just washed our feet.

Thomas@thomasthetwin

He says we know the way to where he’s going. We don’t even know where he’s going. So, no. How are we meant to know the way?

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @thomasthetwin

His answer: he is the way, and the truth, and the life. Nobody gets to the Father except through him.

John@johnzebedee

He talked for a long time tonight. The bits I keep going back to: don’t let your hearts be troubled. Love each other the way he’s loved us. Nobody has greater love than someone who gives up his life for his friends. And we’ll have trouble in this world, but be brave. He’s overcome the world.

Matthew@matthew

Sang a hymn and headed out to the Mount of Olives, same as every night this week. On the way he said all of us would fall away tonight. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep scatter.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Even if every one of them falls away, I won’t. I’ll go to prison with him. I’ll die with him.

Matthew@matthewSang a hymn and headed out to the Mount of Olives, same as every night this week. On the way he said all of us would fall away tonight. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep scatter.
Matthew@matthew

Replying to @simonpeter

He told him: before the rooster crows twice tonight, you’ll deny me three times.

Thursday, late

James@jameszebedee · Gethsemane

Olive grove called Gethsemane. He took Peter, John and me further in. Said he’s so sad it feels like it could kill him. Asked us to stay and keep watch.

James@jameszebedee

Replying to @jameszebedee

He went on a bit further and fell with his face on the ground. Asked his Father to take this cup away from him, if there’s any way. Then: not what I want. What you want.

Show 1 more reply
Simon Peter@simonpeter

He came back and found us asleep. Couldn’t we keep watch with him for one hour? The spirit is willing, he said, but the body is weak. Three times he came back. Three times, asleep.

The temple guards@templeguard

Night shift. Across the valley to the olive grove to arrest him. Soldiers with us this time, torches, lanterns, weapons, the works. And one of his own men is taking us to him.

The temple guards@templeguardSent to arrest him. Came back without him. They asked why we didn't bring him. Honestly? Nobody has ever spoken the way this man speaks.
The temple guards@templeguard

Replying to @templeguard

The sign’s a kiss. Whoever he kisses, that’s the man. Grab him.

John@johnzebedee

He’s woken us up. Get up, let’s go, he said. The one betraying me is here. There are torches coming.

Matthew@matthew

Judas walks straight up to him. Says “Rabbi!” And kisses him.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @matthew

Jesus said: Judas, you’re betraying me with a kiss?

John@johnzebedee

He walked out to meet them. Who are you looking for? Jesus of Nazareth. I am he, he said. And they all stepped back and fell on the ground.

The temple guards@templeguard

Replying to @johnzebedee

Can confirm. All of us. Backwards, flat on the ground.

Malchus@malchus

Some guy just swung a sword at me and took my ear off. My right ear.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @malchus

Peter.

Show 1 more reply

They grabbed me too. I was only wearing a linen sheet. They kept the sheet. They did not keep me.

The temple guards@templeguard

Replying to @linen.cloth

We have the sheet.

The middle of the night

John@johnzebedee · Annas’s house

They’ve tied him up and taken him to Annas first. He’s the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest this year.

Thomas@thomasthetwin

Judas. It was Judas. He was eating with us tonight.

Philip@philip

Replying to @thomasthetwin

He walked out halfway through dinner and we thought he’d gone shopping for the feast.

Show 2 more replies
John@johnzebedee

He told me who, at dinner. Peter nodded at me to ask him, so I leaned back and asked quietly. He said it was the one he’d give this bit of bread to. Then he gave it to Judas and told him: whatever you’re going to do, do it quickly. None of us understood why he said that.

Simon Peter@simonpeterHe just said one of us at this table is going to betray him.
John@johnzebedee · The high priest’s courtyard

Peter and I followed them. The high priest knows me, so I got into the courtyard. Peter’s stuck outside the door. Going back to have a word with the girl on the gate.

Someone by the fire@courtyard.fire

Cold one tonight. We’ve got a charcoal fire going in the high priest’s courtyard, waiting to see what they do with the Galilean. Some new bloke’s just come over to warm his hands.

Annas@annas

Questioned him about his disciples and his teaching. He maintains he has always spoken openly. Synagogues, the temple, nothing in secret. Ask the people who heard me, he says.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @annas

One of the guards slapped him for that. Is that how you answer the high priest? He said: if I said something wrong, tell me what. If I spoke the truth, why hit me?

A witness at the night hearing@witness.one · Caiaphas’s house

They’ve sent him on to Caiaphas. Council’s up in the middle of the night looking for evidence against him. I gave some. I heard him say he’d destroy this temple made by human hands, and in three days build another one not made by hands.

Another witness@witness.two

Replying to @witness.one

That’s not what he said. He said he’s able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.

Show 1 more reply
Caiaphas@caiaphas

He would not answer a single charge. So I put him under oath and asked him directly: are you the Messiah, the Son of God? He said: I am. And that we will see him sitting at God’s right hand, coming on the clouds of heaven. I tore my robes. Why do we need any more witnesses? You have all heard the blasphemy.

The temple guards@templeguard

Some of the men guarding him have blindfolded him. They hit him and keep saying: prophesy! Who hit you?

The girl on the door@gatekeeper.courtyard

On the door at the high priest’s tonight. One of the Galilean’s followers, one the high priest knows, got me to let his friend in. Now the friend’s by the fire and I’ve had a proper look at him. I’m sure I saw him with that Nazarene, Jesus. So I asked him. You’re one of his, aren’t you?

Simon Peter@simonpeter

Replying to @gatekeeper.courtyard

That wasn’t me. I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

That was me. Right as I said it, he turned round and looked straight at me. It wasn’t until he did that I remembered what he’d told me: before the rooster crows, you’ll deny me three times. I went outside and cried like I’ve never cried.

Simon Peter@simonpeterMay God curse me if I’m lying. I do not know the man.

The middle of the night

John@johnzebedee

I’m the one who got him in through the gate. I was right there in that courtyard. Three times, and then the rooster.

Simon Peter@simonpeterMay God curse me if I’m lying. I do not know the man.

Friday, dawn

First light. The full council has met again: chief priests, elders, teachers of the law. A decision has been reached. He has been tied up and is being taken to Pilate, the Roman governor.

Someone serving in the temple@temple.courts · The temple

A man just came into the temple with a bag of silver, trying to give it back to the chief priests. Kept saying he’d sinned. That the man he’d handed over was innocent.

Replying to @temple.courts

They told him: what’s that got to do with us? That’s your problem. So he threw the coins down in the temple and walked out.

Friday, early morning

A soldier at the governor’s headquarters@praetorium.guard · The Praetorium

Early shift at the governor’s headquarters. The temple lot have brought a prisoner and won’t come inside. Something about not making themselves unclean before they eat the Passover. So Pilate has to go out to them.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

I asked what the charge was. Their reply: if he were not a criminal, we would not have brought him to you. Most helpful.

Replying to @pontiuspilate

Kindly note: he is leading our nation astray. He opposes paying taxes to Caesar. He claims to be the Messiah, a king.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Asked him straight: are you the king of the Jews? He says his kingdom isn’t from this world. If it were, his people would be fighting to stop him being handed over. So you are a king? He said he came into the world to tell the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to him.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

What is truth?

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

I informed them that I can find no basis for a charge against him. They grew louder. He stirs up the people all over Judea, they say, starting in Galilee.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Replying to @pontiuspilate

They have thrown everything at him. He has not said a word. I confess I am amazed.

Friday, morning

Herod Antipas@herodantipas

They’ve sent me Jesus. At last. I’ve wanted to see him for ages. Rather hoping he’ll do one of his signs.

Herod Antipas@herodantipas

Replying to @herodantipas

Asked him question after question. Nothing. Not one word. Waste of a morning. We had our fun, put a fancy robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Festival custom: I release one prisoner, of their choosing. So: Jesus, or Barabbas? Barabbas is held for rebellion and murder, for anyone wondering.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Replying to @pontiuspilate

In the middle of all this, a message from my wife. Have nothing to do with that innocent man, she says. She has suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.

The chief priests are going round the crowd. Ask for Barabbas, they’re saying. Get Jesus executed.

Pilate asked which one. The whole crowd: Barabbas!

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Replying to @crowd.at.pilates

Then what do I do with Jesus, the one you call the Messiah? They said: crucify him. Why, what’s he done wrong? They just shouted louder.

The crowds@thecrowds

Crucify him! Crucify him!

Pilate’s had him flogged. Now the whole company’s been called in. Someone found a purple robe. Someone twisted thorns into a crown and put it on his head. Long live the king of the Jews, they said. Then they hit him.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Brought him out to them in the thorns and the purple robe. Look. Here is the man.

Replying to @pontiuspilate

We have a law, and according to that law he must die. He claimed to be the Son of God.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

When they said Son of God, I got more afraid. Went back inside and asked him where he’s from. No answer. Don’t you realise I have the power to free you or crucify you? He said I’d have no power over him at all if it hadn’t been given me from above.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate · The Stone Pavement

Tried to let him go. They shouted: if you let this man go, you’re no friend of Caesar. So I sat on the judgement seat at the Stone Pavement. Here is your king, I said. The chief priests answered: our only king is Caesar.

Pontius Pilate@pontiuspilate

Getting nowhere, and it’s about to turn into a riot. Took water and washed my hands in front of them. I’m innocent of this man’s blood. It’s on you.

Replying to @pontiuspilate

The whole crowd shouted back: his blood is on us, and on our children.

Barabbas@barabbas

They just opened the door. I’m out. The crowd asked for me. The other one, Jesus, is going to be crucified.

Replying to @barabbas

A man in for murder walks out, and the one even Pilate says is innocent goes to the cross. How?

Friday, the road out of the city

John@johnzebedee

He came out carrying his own cross.

Simon of Cyrene@simonofcyrene

He said: Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing. We were the ones doing it.

Split his clothes four ways, one share each. The tunic’s one piece, woven top to bottom, no seam. Nobody wanted to tear it, so we threw dice for it.

John@johnzebedee

Pilate had a notice put up over him. JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. In Aramaic, Latin and Greek, so everyone can read it.

Replying to @johnzebedee

We requested that it be amended to read: this man SAID he was king of the Jews.

David, a thousand years earlier. The laughing, the line about trusting God, the dice for his clothes. Almost word for word.

David@davidThey look at me and laugh. If he trusts the LORD so much, they say, let the LORD rescue him. They've pierced my hands and my feet. They're throwing dice for my clothes.

The other one hanging here keeps shouting at him. Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself, and us. I told him: aren’t you even afraid of God? We deserve this. He’s done nothing wrong.
