The birth

From an old priest struck silent in the temple to a baby in a manger and a boy of twelve in his Father’s house, as it happened.

How Story is made

In the days of King Herod

Luke@luke

Theophilus, this one’s for you. Plenty of people have written about these things. I went back to the very beginning, talked to the people who were there, checked everything, and put it in order. So you can be sure.

Luke@luke

Start with an old couple in the hill country of Judea. Zechariah, a priest, and his wife Elizabeth. Good people, both of them, the kind who keep every one of God’s commands. No children, and now they’re both getting on in years.

The incense hour

A priest in Zechariah’s division@abijah.priest · The temple, Jerusalem

Our division’s week on duty at the temple. We draw lots for who goes into the holy place to burn the incense. Today it’s Zechariah. Some priests wait their whole lives for that.

Zechariah@zechariah

Replying to @abijah.priest

Going in.

Someone praying outside the temple@praying.outside · The temple, Jerusalem

Incense hour. Big crowd out here in the courtyard, all of us praying, waiting for the priest to come back out.

A week later

Our week’s done. Zechariah worked the whole of it and still hasn’t said a single word. He’s gone home to the hill country.

Five months later

Elizabeth@elizabeth · The hill country of Judea

Five months I’ve kept to the house. I’m ready to say it now. I’m pregnant. At my age. The Lord has done this for me. All those years of people looking at me like that, and he’s taken it away.

Elizabeth! So that’s why we haven’t seen you!

The sixth month

A neighbour of Elizabeth's@hillcountry.neighbour · The hill country of Judea

Visitor at Zechariah and Elizabeth’s. A relative of hers, come all the way down from Nazareth in Galilee. Must have left in a right hurry.

Elizabeth@elizabeth

Mary’s here. My relative from Nazareth. The moment I heard her say hello, the baby jumped inside me.

Elizabeth@elizabeth

Replying to @elizabeth

And I knew. I shouted it out loud. She’s the most blessed woman alive, and so is the child she’s carrying. Why would the mother of my Lord come to me?

Luke@luke

So what had happened to Mary? Here’s what I pieced together. Not long before, up in Nazareth, God sent the angel Gabriel to her. She’s engaged to a man called Joseph, from David’s family line. The angel says she’s highly favoured and the Lord is with her. She’s shaken, trying to work out what kind of greeting that is.

Elizabeth@elizabethMary’s here. My relative from Nazareth. The moment I heard her say hello, the baby jumped inside me.
Luke@luke

Replying to @luke

He tells her not to be afraid. She’ll have a son, and she’s to name him Jesus. He’ll be called the Son of the Most High, God will give him David’s throne, and his kingdom will never end.

Show 2 more replies

David’s throne, and a kingdom that never ends. That’s the promise Nathan brought David a thousand years ago.

Nathan@nathan.prophetThat night the LORD sent me back to David. He isn’t the one to build a house for the LORD. The LORD will build David a house: a son after him, and a throne that will last for ever.

Three months later

Mary@mary

Three months with Elizabeth. Heading home to Nazareth.

Elizabeth@elizabeth

Replying to @mary

Nearly time for me too.

Elizabeth@elizabeth

He’s here. A boy.

The eighth day

Naming day. We’re all round at Zechariah’s for the circumcision. Obviously the boy’s getting his dad’s name.

Replying to @thehillcountry

Elizabeth says no. He’s John. John?! Nobody in the family is called John.

Show 3 more replies
Zechariah@zechariah

You were right. It was a vision. There was an angel standing by the incense altar. Gabriel, the one who stands in God’s presence. He said Elizabeth would have a son and we were to call him John. I asked how I could be sure. We’re old. I didn’t believe him, and that’s why I couldn’t speak till today.

A priest in Zechariah’s division@abijah.priestHe’s seen something in there. A vision. Look at him.

Replying to @zechariah

Knew it. Nobody takes that long in there for nothing.

The last anyone saw of Elijah, he was going up in a whirlwind. Now a baby is coming in his spirit and power.

The books of Kings@booksofkingsThey’re still walking along, talking, when a chariot of fire with horses of fire comes between them, and Elijah goes up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Word’s all round the hill country of Judea already. Everyone keeps asking the same thing. What’s this child going to be?

Luke@luke

Replying to @thehillcountry

God was with him. You could see it.

Zechariah@zechariah

Praise the Lord, the God of Israel. He’s come to set his people free, the way he promised through the prophets long ago. He hasn’t forgotten the oath he swore to our father Abraham.

Moses@mosesAnd God swears an oath on himself: descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the beach, and every nation on earth blessed through them. All because Abraham did what he said.
Zechariah@zechariah

And you, my little boy, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You’ll go ahead of the Lord to get the way ready. A new day is about to dawn on us from heaven, to shine on people sitting in the dark.

Elizabeth@elizabeth

Replying to @zechariah

All those months without a word. Then that.

Now to Joseph, up in Nazareth. He’s engaged to Mary, and an engagement here is as binding as a marriage. And she’s pregnant, and he knows the child isn’t his.

He’s a good man, and he won’t have her shamed in public. So he’s decided to end it quietly.

The census

Orders from Caesar Augustus himself. A census of the whole empire, the first one while Quirinius is governor of Syria. Everyone has to go back to their own family’s town to register. Brilliant.

Replying to @on.the.road

So now the whole country’s on the road, every family going somewhere different. Absolute nightmare.

All the way to Bethlehem? Now? Travel safe, y’all.

Someone in Bethlehem@bethlehem.local · Bethlehem

Bethlehem has never been this full. Literally everyone whose family comes from here is back to register. Every guest room in town is taken.

Replying to @bethlehem.local

Same everywhere. People kipping wherever they can find a space.

Bethlehem, that night

Joseph@josephofnazareth · Bethlehem

He’s here. A son. Mary’s wrapped him up snug and laid him in a manger. The animals’ feeding trough. There wasn’t any room for us in the guest room.

The fields, the same night

Night shift. Out in the fields outside Bethlehem, keeping watch over the sheep. Same as every night.

A shepherd outside Bethlehem@fields.of.bethlehem

Replying to @night.watch

Quiet one. Nothing ever happens on the night shift.

An angel. Right here in the field. And light everywhere, the glory of the Lord shining all round us. We’re terrified.

Another shepherd@night.watch

Luke@luke · The temple, Jerusalem

When the days of purification the law of Moses sets are over, Mary and Joseph bring him up to the temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. The law says every firstborn son belongs to the Lord.

Luke@luke

Replying to @luke

Their offering is two young pigeons. A detail I found: that’s the one the law allows if you can’t afford a lamb.

Simeon@simeon · The temple, Jerusalem

I’ve been waiting a long time for God to comfort Israel. The Holy Spirit told me I wouldn’t die until I’d seen the Lord’s Messiah. Today the Spirit sent me to the temple.

Simeon@simeon

Replying to @simeon

A couple came in with their baby. I took him in my arms. Lord, you can let me go now, in peace, like you promised. I’ve seen your rescue with my own eyes. A light for the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.

Bethlehem, in Judea. The prophet wrote it. Bethlehem is not the least of Judah’s towns, because a ruler will come from there, a shepherd for God’s people Israel.

Bethlehem, where Samuel found the youngest son out with the sheep and anointed him king. Now the prophet says a ruler is coming from the same town. A shepherd.

At the palace

The king received the star-watchers today. In private. He wished to know the exact date the star first appeared. Very particular about that.

Another dream for Joseph, as soon as the visitors had gone. An angel: get up, take the child and his mother, and run to Egypt. Stay there till I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to kill him. So Joseph got up and took them, that same night.

Later, at the palace
