Compare
Mutter vs Bible Mode
We make Mutter, so we're biased. Here's an honest comparison. Mutter is a free iPhone prayer app made by an independent maker. Everything we say about Bible Mode is checked against its own pages and app store listings, dated 1 October 2026, and linked below.
Bible Mode and Mutter start from the same idea: the moment you reach for Instagram or TikTok can be a moment with God instead. They go about it differently. Bible Mode locks the apps you choose and unlocks them when you scan a page of your paper Bible or work through a short verse reflection. Mutter shows you the verse or prayer you chose for today; you say Amen and the app opens.

Where Bible Mode is better
- It's here now, on iPhone and iPad. Bible Mode is on the App Store today and works on iPad too. Mutter is iPhone only.
- Your paper Bible can be the key. Unlocking by scanning a page of a real Bible is a lovely idea if you read on paper. It gets the book off the shelf.
- More to do inside the app. Bible Chat for questions, Bible games and trivia, Quiet Time Mode, streaks and badges, and narrated sleep stories.
- More translations and languages. It includes the KJV and ESV, and the app is in English, French, German, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Mutter is in English only, with three public-domain translations (BSB, WEB and KJV).
- Lots of people already use it. Over 12,000 US ratings averaging 4.9, and plenty of reviewers say it has helped them read every day.
Where Mutter is different
- You choose the words. In Mutter you pick the verse or prayer for today, often something God has put on your heart, and that's what you see before the app opens.
- A short pause, not a lock. Say Amen and the app opens. It's meant to turn the reach for your phone into a prayer, not to stop you using it.
- Everything is free. There are no supporter tiers or paid features. Every part of the app is free, with no ads.
- Drawings and a reading library. Mutter draws each verse or prayer you save, and comes with Spurgeon's devotionals, articles from the great Christian books, hymns, historic prayers and Story, the Bible told as a timeline.
What people say about Bible Mode
Across 200 recent App Store reviews (September 2025 to September 2026), most were five stars. People say it helps them read the Bible daily and spend less time scrolling, and like the widgets, the built-in Bible and the quizzes. The complaints are mostly about paying: some features cost money, and one feature asks you to invite friends or pay. A few mention streaks not saving and the use of AI.
“Locks apps, has built in bible, has quizzes and puzzles.”
“I wish it was completely free though”
From Bible Mode's public App Store reviews, read 1 October 2026. Mutter is new, so it doesn't have many reviews yet.

Who should pick which
Pick Bible Mode if you want a firm lock on your apps, you read a paper Bible and like the idea of scanning it, you use an iPad, or you want extras like Bible Chat and games.
Pick Mutter if you'd rather pause than be locked out, you want to pray the words you chose yourself, and you'd like the whole app free, with drawings and a library to read. (Once it's on the App Store.)
