Compare
Mutter vs Hallow
We make Mutter, so we're biased. Here's an honest comparison. Mutter is a free iPhone prayer app made by an independent maker. Everything we say about Hallow is checked against its own pages and app store listings, dated 1 October 2026, and linked below.
Hallow is a large audio prayer app with a Catholic heart: over 10,000 guided sessions, the Rosary, Lectio Divina, sleep prayers and music, with a free version and a subscription. Mutter is a smaller, free app built around one habit: before the apps you choose open, it shows the verse or prayer you picked for today.

Where Hallow is better
- Far more to listen to. Over 10,000 audio sessions, 50+ guides, sleep prayers, chant and music, and a choice of lengths for each prayer. Mutter has a handful of ways to pray one verse or prayer at a time.
- Real, well-known voices. Sessions are led by people like Jonathan Roumie and Fr. Mike Schmitz, and its home page invites you to join Mark Wahlberg. Mutter's listening uses a synthetic voice.
- Catholic depth. The Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Lectio Divina, the Examen, Mass readings, novenas, litanies, Bible in a Year and Catechism in a Year. Its content is reviewed by Church leaders.
- On almost every device. iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Amazon devices and the web, in seven languages. Mutter is iPhone only, in English.
- A generous free version and a big community. Daily prayers, the Rosary and Bible in a Year are free, and there are groups, prayer campaigns and seasonal challenges like Pray40 in Lent.
Where Mutter is different
- A prayer before your apps. App Guard shows the verse or prayer you chose for today before Instagram, TikTok or any app you pick. Say Amen and the app opens.
- Completely free. No subscription, no trial to remember to cancel, no ads and no donations.
- Broadly Christian. Mutter isn't written for one tradition. Its library is Spurgeon, articles from the great Christian books, hymns and historic prayers, with three Bible translations.
- Drawings of your words. Each verse or prayer you save gets its own paper-and-ink drawing, and it comes back to you through the day on widgets and reminders.
- Story. The Bible told as a timeline of posts, in everyday words, each linked to its verses.
What people say about Hallow
Across 150 recent App Store reviews (April 2025 to September 2026), two thirds were five stars. People love the range of Catholic prayer, Fr. Mike, and how easy it makes a daily habit. Most of the one-star reviews are about being charged for a full year after a free trial and finding refunds hard. Others say too little is free, dislike the AI narrator voices, or feel it's too US-focused. Some non-Catholics find it very Catholic, which is what it's for.
“it really makes it so easy to incorporate some meaningful prayer”
“very much an app for Catholics and not for Christians in general”
From Hallow's public App Store reviews, read 1 October 2026. Mutter is new, so it doesn't have many reviews yet.

Who should pick which
Pick Hallow if you're Catholic or love Catholic prayer, you like to listen, you want lots of guided sessions and sleep content, or you need Android, iPad or the web.
Pick Mutter if you want something that meets you when you reach for your phone, you'd rather not pay or subscribe, and you'd like a broadly Christian library to read. (Once it's on the App Store.)
