Your Majesty, kindly note the following proposal, agreed by all the royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors. For thirty days, anyone who prays to any god or human being except you goes into the lions’ den. Once signed, under the law of the Medes and Persians, it cannot be changed.

Your Majesty, did you not sign a decree that for thirty days anyone who prays to any god or man except you goes to the lions? We regret to report that Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, takes no notice of you or your decree. He still prays three times a day.

We have put the following to the king. Every official in the kingdom agrees: for thirty days, nobody may ask anything of any god or any man except the king. Anyone who does goes into the lions’ den.

We reminded the king this evening, respectfully, that under the law of the Medes and Persians no decree of the king can be changed.
