Started so well. Forty-one years.

Son of Abijah, king of Judah for forty-one years. I tore down the idols, even my own grandmother’s. When a million men came at us, I prayed and God answered. Later I trusted a treaty instead of God, and put the prophet who told me so in prison.

Got rid of every idol my ancestors made. Removed my grandmother Maacah as queen mother, too. She’d made a disgusting Asherah pole. I cut it down and burned it in the Kidron Valley.

While the land’s quiet, let’s build. Walls, towers, gates, bars. The land is still ours because we looked for the LORD. We looked for him, and he’s given us peace on every side.

Asa@king.asa · Mareshah

Zerah the Cushite’s army is at Mareshah. Huge. So I cried out: LORD, there’s no one like you for helping the powerless against the mighty. Help us. We’re relying on you, and we’ve come out against this army in your name. Don’t let a mere human win against you.
