Orders were to flog him and question him. We had him stretched out and strapped down. Then he asks me: is it legal to flog a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried? Yeah. I went straight to the commander.

Nine last night we left Jerusalem. Two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, two hundred spearmen. For one prisoner. We had him in Antipatris by morning, and the horsemen took him on to the governor in Caesarea.
