Our hearts were burning.

A follower of Jesus. Walking home to Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, with a friend, on the worst weekend of our lives. A stranger joined us on the road.

Emmaus, near JerusalemFirst seen Luke 24:18

Known for

  • Walking to Emmaus with the risen Jesus without recognising him (Luke 24:13–27)
  • Recognising Jesus when he broke the bread (Luke 24:30–31)
  • “Were not our hearts burning within us?” (Luke 24:32)

Then a stranger falls in with us and asks what we're talking about. We just stopped. You could see it on our faces. Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know? Jesus of Nazareth. We had hoped he was the one who'd set Israel free. And now it's the third day.

That stranger. He walked us through everything the Scriptures say about the Messiah, starting with Moses. We asked him to stay. At the table he took the bread, gave thanks and broke it. And suddenly we could see. It was him. Then he was gone.

Walking home to Emmaus, about seven miles, going over everything that’s happened. A man comes alongside us and asks what we’re talking about.

Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know what’s happened there this week? He said: what things?

He said: you’re so foolish, so slow to believe everything the prophets said. Then he started with Moses and walked us through every part of the Scriptures about himself.

Got to the village and he acted like he was going on further. We said stay with us, it’s nearly evening. At the table he took the bread, thanked God, broke it, and gave it to us. And we saw. It was him. And he was gone.
