Runs the palace. Carries the key.

Eliakim son of Hilkiah, in charge of King Hezekiah’s palace. Isaiah said the LORD would put the key to David’s house on my shoulder. Now it’s me they send when the news is bad.

Went out with Shebna and Joah to meet the Assyrian king’s field commander by the upper pool. His opening: what are you trusting in? Egypt? That’s a splintered reed that goes through your hand if you lean on it. He offered us two thousand horses, if we could find riders for them. We requested that he speak to us in Aramaic, not Hebrew, with everyone on the wall listening.

The king sent Shebna, the senior priests and me to Isaiah, all of us in sackcloth. His words: today is a day of distress and disgrace. We’re like a woman in labour with no strength left to give birth. Maybe the LORD your God heard that commander mocking the living God. Pray for the few of us who are left.
