For real, they’re driving the new governor round in Pharaoh’s second chariot, with men up front shouting “Kneel!” Pharaoh’s own ring on his finger. He’s a Hebrew. Thirty years old.

A farmer in Egypt

Money gone. Animals gone. Nothing left to sell.
An Egyptian who farmed a small plot by the Nile. In the famine we paid the governor Joseph for grain with our money, then our animals, then our land, and then ourselves. He gave us seed, and we lived.

The seven good years are over and the famine is everywhere. We begged Pharaoh for bread. All he said was: go to Joseph. Do whatever he tells you.
First our money went on grain. Then our animals. Then there was nothing left but ourselves and our land, so we sold both to Pharaoh for food. Joseph gave us seed: a fifth of the harvest to Pharaoh, the rest ours. He saved our lives.
Harvest after harvest after harvest. Never seen the land give like this, honestly. A fifth of it goes to the governor’s storehouses in the cities.
Seven good years, over. The famine’s started, just like the governor said. Every country round us has nothing. Egypt has bread.
