Dough on my shoulder. Kids at my heels.
Hebrew, born a slave in Egypt like my mother and hers. We live in Goshen, among the Egyptians. I did everything Moses told us that spring, down to the blood on the door.

Year one.
A bunch of hyssop, dipped in the bowl. Blood brushed across the top of the doorframe and down both sides. Done.
Tonight’s dinner: the lamb, roasted whole over the fire. Flat bread, no yeast. Bitter herbs. Eaten fast, dressed to travel, sandals on, a staff in every hand. Like we’re leaving any minute.
No time for anything. The dough hasn’t even risen. It’s in the kneading bowl, wrapped in a cloak, up on my shoulder.

Egyptians lining the road, telling us to hurry up. No need to tell me twice.
