Jeroboam son of Nebat

@jeroboam · 1 post

Came back from Egypt. Took ten tribes.

An Ephraimite from Zeredah; my mother Zeruah was a widow. I served Solomon until a prophet tore his cloak into twelve pieces and handed me ten, then I ran to Egypt to get away from him. When Solomon died, the tribes sent for me. I ended up king of the north, Israel, and I set up my own gods and my own priests so my people wouldn’t go to Jerusalem.

Zeredah, EphraimFirst seen 1 Kings 11:26

Known for

  • Ahijah’s torn cloak (1 Kings 11:29–31)
  • Speaking for the tribes at Shechem (1 Kings 12:3–4)
  • First king of the northern kingdom (1 Kings 12:20)
  • The golden calves at Bethel and Dan (1 Kings 12:28–29)

Kindly note: going all the way up to Jerusalem is too much for you. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. One at Bethel, one at Dan.
