The steward of Joseph’s house

I run the house. I follow the orders.

Egyptian. I manage the household of the governor of all Egypt. When he tells me to put silver in sacks, I put silver in sacks. When he tells me to put a silver cup in the youngest one’s sack, I do that too.

Kindly relax. All is well, and there is nothing to fear. Your God, the God of your father, put treasure in your sacks. I received your payment. Simeon is being brought out to you now.

The Canaanite brothers are back, with a younger one this time. The governor saw them and gave me orders: take them to my house, kill an animal and get it cooked. They’re eating with me at noon.

They stopped me at the door. We found our silver in our sacks, we’ve brought it back, we don’t know who put it there. I told them: all is well. Don’t be afraid. Your God, the God of your father, put that treasure in your sacks. I had your payment. Then I brought Simeon out to them.

Last night’s orders from the governor. Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry. Put each man’s silver back in. And put his cup, the silver one, his own, in the youngest one’s sack.

The governor’s sent me after them. They were barely out of the city. Asked them what he told me to ask: why have you repaid kindness like this? That is the governor’s own cup.

Loading up. Wagons, food for the road, new clothes for every brother. And for the youngest: three hundred pieces of silver and five sets of clothes.
