Family business. Very family. Very business.

Rebekah’s brother, from Aram. When I saw the gold on my sister’s wrists I went straight out to meet the man. Years later my nephew Jacob turned up, and worked for me. Twenty years. We have different memories of those twenty years.

Saw the gold ring and the bracelets on my sister, and I was out of that door and down to the well. Told him: come in, you’re blessed by the LORD. Why are you standing out here?

He wouldn’t even eat until he’d told us why he’d come. By the end of it Dad and I said it: this is from the LORD. Not our call. Take her.

Mum and I asked for ten days with her first. He wanted to leave in the morning. So we called her in and asked her.

We sent her off with a blessing. May our sister be the mother of thousands and thousands.

It’s not done round here, marrying off the younger before the firstborn. Finish the wedding week with this one, and you can have Rachel as well. For another seven years’ work, mind.

Seven days chasing them. Asked him why he snuck off. I’d have given them a proper send-off, singing, tambourines, harps. He didn’t even let me kiss my grandchildren goodbye. And why steal my gods?

Those are my daughters. Those kids are my kids. Those flocks are my flocks. Everything you can see is mine.
