My sons’ names say it all. Reuben: the LORD has seen my misery, surely my husband will love me now. Simeon: the LORD heard I’m not loved. Levi: now at last my husband will be attached to me.

The older sister. Six sons. Still hoping.
Laban’s older daughter. My father gave me to Jacob on his wedding night instead of Rachel. Jacob loved Rachel. But the LORD saw me. I’m the mother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah. Two of Israel’s great lines, the priests and the kings, come from my sons.

Son number four. Judah. This time I will praise the LORD.
Reuben found mandrakes, the plant people say helps you have children, and Rachel wanted them. So we did a deal: the mandrakes for a night with Jacob. When he came in from the fields I told him: you’re with me tonight. I’ve paid for you.

Is there anything left for us in our father’s house? He treats us like foreigners. He sold us, and then he spent the money.
