We lit a fire.

I live on Malta. One cold, rainy morning a whole shipload of people washed up on our beach. We lit a fire for them. Then one of them picked up some sticks.

Shipwrecked lot washed up here, so we lit a fire. A viper just fastened itself on one of their hands. He must be a murderer. Escaped the sea, and justice still won’t let him live.

A whole shipload of people just washed up on our beach. It’s pouring with rain and it’s freezing, so we’ve got a fire going for all of them.

One of them’s been gathering sticks for the fire. He put them on and a viper came out of the heat and fastened onto his hand. It’s hanging off him.

It’s been ages. We’ve all been watching him. Nothing. Not even a swelling.

Word’s all round the island. Everyone who’s ill is going to see the man from the ship. And they’re coming back cured.

Loaded them up with everything they’ll need for the voyage. Going to miss them.
