Went away full. Came back empty. Or so I thought.

From Bethlehem in Judah. We left in a famine for Moab: my husband Elimelech, our boys Mahlon and Chilion and me. Elimelech and both boys died there. I came home with nothing but my daughter-in-law Ruth, and I didn't hide how bitter I was. My name means pleasant. For a while I asked people to call me Mara, bitter. Then I started making plans.

  • “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara” (Ruth 1:20)
  • Telling Ruth that Boaz was a guardian-redeemer (Ruth 2:20)
  • Holding her grandson Obed on her lap (Ruth 4:16)

Went to Moab in a famine with my husband and our two boys. All three died there.

Told my daughters-in-law to go home to their mothers. I'm too old to give them husbands.

Don't call me Naomi. Call me Mara. Bitter. I left full, and the LORD's brought me back empty.

Ruth's just come home with about a sackful of barley. One day's gleaning. Hang on, whose field? Boaz's? Boaz! He's family. He's one of our redeemers.

Sit tight, my girl. That man won't rest until it's settled. Today.
