Babylon the Great. I built it.

King of Babylon. Took Jerusalem, and brought its brightest young nobles to my court. Built this great city by my own mighty power, for the glory of my majesty. That’s what I used to say, anyway.

Known for

  • The dream of the great statue (Daniel 2)
  • The golden statue and the furnace (Daniel 3)
  • Eating grass like an ox (Daniel 4:33)

Interviewed the young men who’ve finished their training. Nobody comes close to the four from Judah. Whatever I ask them, they’re ten times better than every magician and enchanter in my kingdom.

Can’t sleep. Had dreams and they won’t leave me alone. Called in the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers.

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon@nebuchadnezzar · Plain of Dura

Have set up a statue of gold on the plain of Dura. Sixty cubits high. Every governor and official in the provinces has been summoned to the dedication.

Praise the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He sent his angel and rescued his servants who trusted him. They defied the king’s order and risked their lives rather than worship any god except their own. No other god can rescue like this.

One of the king's advisers@royal.adviser · Plain of DuraThe king jumped up. Asked us: didn’t we throw three men in, tied up? Certainly, Your Majesty. And he says: look. I can see four men, untied, walking around in the fire, not hurt. And the fourth looks like a son of the gods.

From King Nebuchadnezzar to every people, nation and language on earth. Peace and prosperity to you. I want to tell you what the Most High God has done for me.

I was at home, relaxed, doing well. Then a dream frightened me. None of my wise men could explain it. Then Daniel came in. Belteshazzar, I call him, after my god.

The dream: a huge tree reaching the sky, fruit enough for everyone, animals sheltering under it, birds in its branches. Then a holy one comes down from heaven and shouts: cut it down. Leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze. Let him live with the animals until seven periods of time have gone by.

Daniel was shaken for a while. Then he told me: the tree is you, Your Majesty. You’ll be driven away from people and eat grass like cattle, until you admit that the Most High rules over human kingdoms. His advice: stop doing wrong, do what’s right, show mercy to the oppressed. Maybe things will go well for you a while longer.

Twelve months later I was walking on the roof of my palace, and I said it. Look at Babylon. Great Babylon. I built this, by my own mighty power, for the glory of my majesty.

At the end of that time I looked up to heaven, and my mind came back. I praised the Most High. His kingdom lasts for ever. Nobody can stop him, or ask him, “What have you done?” I got my throne back, and more. So now I praise the King of heaven. Everything he does is right, and he can bring down anyone who’s proud. I should know.
