Everyone in trouble, everyone in debt, everyone fed up ended up in the cave at Adullam with David. About four hundred of us.

In debt, in trouble, in the cave.
I was one of the ones who ended up with David at Adullam: in trouble, in debt, or just fed up. Four hundred of us, then six hundred.

Saul on one side of the mountain, us on the other, and he’s closing in. Then a messenger: the Philistines are raiding. He just turns round and goes.
You won’t believe what happened today. We were hiding at the back of a cave near En-gedi, and who walks in to relieve himself? Saul.

Told David this was the day the LORD talked about. He crept up and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. That’s it. A corner.

Not one of them woke up. How?
Got back to Ziklag and it’s been burned. Wives, sons, daughters, all taken. We cried until we couldn’t cry any more.

Some of the men are talking about stoning David.
We got everything back. Everyone. Nobody missing.

They could sling a stone or shoot an arrow with either hand. Either hand.
Then some Gadites came over to us. Crossed the Jordan in the first month, with the river flooding its banks. Faces like lions, fast as gazelles on the hills. The weakest of them could take on a hundred. Not kidding.
Philistines raiding the Valley of Rephaim again. David asked God what to do. Don’t go straight up at them, he was told. Circle round and come at them in front of the balsam trees. When you hear the sound of marching in the treetops, go. God has gone out ahead of you.

He did exactly what God said. We chased them down all the way from Gibeon to Gezer. For real.
