Crew on the Alexandrian grain ship to Italy. Two hundred and seventy-six people aboard that voyage, and I was one of the ones meant to know what I was doing.

Welcome aboard. We haul Egypt’s grain to Italy. This trip, apparently, prisoners and soldiers too.

South wind. Gentle. This is our chance. Anchor up, keeping close to the coast of Crete.

The south wind hasn’t held. A wind like a whirlwind just came screaming down off the island. It’s the north-easter.

Day three. Now it’s the ship’s own gear going over. Throwing it with our bare hands.

Everyone’s had all they want to eat. Now the grain’s going over the side, to lighten her.
