Orders from the governor for the Canaanites: fill their bags with grain, put each man’s silver back in his sack, and give them food for the road. Not my place to ask.

Egyptian. Serving the governor. Seeing things.
I work in the house of the governor of Egypt, the man who runs the grain. I carry, I serve, I wait outside doors.

Governor’s home. They gave him the gift and bowed to the ground. He asked how they are. Then: how’s your old father, the one you told me about? Is he still alive?
Three tables. The governor on his own, the Hebrews at one, us Egyptians at another. Egyptians won’t eat with Hebrews. It’s a whole thing here.
They’re back. All eleven Hebrews, flat on the ground in front of the governor. He asked them what they thought they were doing. Don’t you know a man like me finds things out?

He said no. Only the one who had the cup stays as his slave. The rest are free to go home to their father.
He’s just sent every one of us out of the room. All of us. Only the Hebrews are still in there with him.

You can hear him crying from out here. Loud. The whole street can hear it.
