The lions’ den

A new king in Babylon, a law that can’t be changed, a window left open towards Jerusalem and a long night by a sealed stone, as it happened.

How Story is made

The night of the feast

The book of Daniel@bookofdaniel · The palace, Babylon

Catching up? Babylon. King Belshazzar is throwing a feast for a thousand of his nobles, and they’re drinking out of the gold cups his father Nebuchadnezzar took from God’s temple in Jerusalem. Then a human hand appears and writes on the palace wall.

A guest at Belshazzar's feast@guest.at.the.feast · The palace, BabylonOkay, what. Fingers. A human hand, writing on the plaster wall by the lampstand. The king’s watching it. He’s gone white. His legs have given way and his knees are knocking together.

Loud night at the palace. The king and his nobles shouting. None of the wise men can even read what’s on the wall.

The queen@queen.of.babylon

Replying to @palace.servant

Told him to stop looking so pale and send for Daniel. His father made that man head of all his wise men. He solves what nobody else can.

Daniel@daniel

Told the king he could keep his gifts. I’d read it for him anyway.

He read it. Numbered, weighed, divided. God has numbered the days of the king’s reign and brought it to an end. He’s been weighed on the scales and come up short. And his kingdom goes to the Medes and Persians.

Replying to @guest.at.the.feast

And the king still had them dress him in purple and put the gold chain round his neck. Third in the kingdom. As if it was good news.

That same night, Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, is killed.

A new king

Someone in Babylon@babylon.local · Babylon

Went to sleep with one king. Woke up with another. Babylon belongs to Darius the Mede now. He’s sixty-two.

Replying to @babylon.local

Numbered, weighed and divided. All in one night.

Jeremiah wrote to us years ago. When Babylon’s seventy years are up, the LORD will bring us home. Babylon’s king is dead. I’m just saying.

Jeremiah@jeremiahWhen Babylon’s seventy years are up, he’ll come and keep his promise and bring you home. He knows the plans he has for you, he says. Plans for your good, not for harm. Plans to give you a future and a hope.
Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede

Organising the kingdom. 120 satraps, each governing a region, and three administrators over them, so the crown doesn’t lose out.

One of the 120 satraps@satrap.province

Some news. I’ve been appointed one of King Darius’s satraps, governor of a region of the kingdom. Honoured to serve.

Someone in Babylon@babylon.local

Replying to @satrap.province

One of a hundred and twenty. Congratulations, I suppose 😅

Show 1 more reply

The three administrators over the satraps have been named. One of them is Daniel. The exile from Judah who read the writing on the wall.

Replying to @court.scribe

One of ours. Near the very top of the kingdom.

At court

A scribe at the royal court@court.scribe · The royal court

Watching Daniel work is something else. Nothing goes missing on his watch. Nothing gets left undone. Nobody at court comes close.

Word going round the court: the king is planning to put Daniel over the whole kingdom.

One of the 120 satraps@satrap.province

Replying to @court.scribe

Over the whole kingdom? Over all hundred and twenty of us?

Show 2 more replies

Word at court: the satraps and the other two administrators are going through everything Daniel has done for the kingdom. Looking for something to charge him with.

Replying to @court.scribe

They haven’t found a thing. No corruption. No carelessness. He’s just honest.

Honest question. How does one man never get a single thing wrong?

A servant at the palace@palace.servant · The palace

Overheard some of the officials talking tonight. One of them said they’re never going to find anything against this Daniel. Not unless it’s to do with the law of his God.

Replying to @palace.servant

Good luck with that. He’s kept to his God since the day he got here.

The day of the proposal

A servant at the palace@palace.servant · The palace

Never seen the throne room this full. The administrators and the satraps have come to the king together. All of them at once.

We have put the following to the king. Every official in the kingdom agrees: for thirty days, nobody may ask anything of any god or any man except the king. Anyone who does goes into the lions’ den.

Replying to @administrators.satraps

Unanimous.

Show 3 more replies

All the king has to do is sign it. Then it’s the law of the Medes and Persians, and that can’t be changed.

Written it up. The king has signed it. Thirty days.

One of the 120 satraps@satrap.province

Replying to @court.scribe

Long live the king.

At Daniel’s window

Someone on Daniel’s street@daniels.street · Daniel’s house

Daniel’s just come home. Straight upstairs, to the room where the windows open towards Jerusalem.

Replying to @daniels.street

He’s on his knees at the window. Praying. Where anyone can see.

Show 1 more reply
Daniel@daniel

On my knees, giving thanks to my God. Same as I always have.

Why his windows face Jerusalem. The day the temple was opened, Solomon asked God that if his people were ever carried off to a far country and prayed towards their land and that house, he’d hear them from heaven. The temple is ruins now. Daniel still faces it.

Solomon@solomonWhen they sin against you, and there’s no one who doesn’t sin, and you let an enemy carry them off to a land far away: if they come to their senses there and turn back to you with all their heart, hear them. Forgive them. And make their captors kind to them.

Back at the window again. That’s twice today.

A whole group of officials just turned up at Daniel’s house. All together. They’ve found him praying.

Replying to @daniels.street

Went to see for ourselves. There he is, asking his God for help. The decree’s been signed and he’s asking his God for help.

At the palace

A scribe at the royal court@court.scribe · The palace

The officials are back in front of the king. First they ask him: didn’t you sign a decree? Thirty days, anyone who prays to any god or man except you, into the lions’ den. He says yes. It stands. It’s the law of the Medes and Persians.

Replying to @court.scribe

Then they tell him who. Daniel, the exile from Judah. They say he ignores the king and his decree, and still prays three times a day.

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede

I have to get Daniel out of this. There has to be a way.

Replying to @darius.the.mede

Nobody here has ever seen the king this upset.

The king hasn’t stopped all day. Every hour it’s the same question. How do we save Daniel?

Someone in Babylon@babylon.local

Can’t the king just cancel it? He’s the king.

Replying to @babylon.local

Not this law. Once the king has signed it, not even the king can change it. That was the whole point of it.

Show 2 more replies

We reminded the king this evening, respectfully, that under the law of the Medes and Persians no decree of the king can be changed.

Replying to @administrators.satraps

The sun’s going down. They all came back together to say that.

Sundown, at the den

The king has given the order.

Replying to @court.scribe

He tried all day. The sun’s gone down. He couldn’t find a way.

One of the men at the lions’ den@lions.den · The lions’ den

We brought Daniel to the den. And threw him in. King’s orders.

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede · The lions’ den

The last thing I said to him: may your God, the one you serve all the time, rescue you.

Replying to @darius.the.mede

Even the king is hoping Daniel’s God comes through.

Brought a stone and put it over the mouth of the den.

One of the king’s nobles@darius.noble · The lions’ den

The king sealed the stone with his own signet ring. Then the rest of us pressed our rings into it as well.

Replying to @darius.noble

So nothing can be changed for Daniel. Nobody gets him out. Not even the king.

Thinking about this tonight. His three friends were thrown into a blazing furnace. They walked out without so much as the smell of smoke on them. Same God.

One of the king's advisers@royal.adviserHe went to the door of the furnace and called them out, and out they came. We all crowded round. The fire hadn’t touched them. Not a hair singed. Clothes fine. They didn’t even smell of smoke.

That night

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede · The palace

Back at the palace. Not eating tonight.

A musician at the palace@palace.musician

Not wanted tonight. The king doesn’t want music. Doesn’t want anything.

Replying to @palace.musician

No music. No food. Nothing.

Someone in Babylon@babylon.local

Anyone else heard? They put Daniel in with the lions tonight. The one who read the writing on the wall.

Replying to @babylon.local

I saw him at his window, same as always. He knew all of this, and he didn’t hide it.

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede

Can’t sleep.

Middle of the night. The king’s still awake.

First light

A servant at the palace@palace.servant · The palace

First light and the king’s up and gone. Hurrying. Towards the den.

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede · The lions’ den

Daniel, servant of the living God! Has your God, the one you serve all the time, been able to rescue you from the lions?

Replying to @darius.the.mede

You could hear it in his voice. He was dreading the answer.

Show 3 more replies
Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede

He’s alive. Had them lift him out of there.

One of the men at the lions’ den@lions.den · The lions’ den

We lifted him out. Checked him over, head to foot. Not a wound on him anywhere.

The book of Daniel@bookofdaniel

Replying to @lions.den

Because he trusted his God.

Show 3 more replies

I saw the king at the den this morning. Never seen him so happy.

Nebuchadnezzar, after the furnace: their God sent his angel and rescued them. Daniel, this morning: my God sent his angel. Different king, different kingdom. Same God.

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon@nebuchadnezzarPraise the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. He sent his angel and rescued his servants who trusted him. They defied the king’s order and risked their lives rather than worship any god except their own. No other god can rescue like this.

Afterwards

Writing out a letter from the king today. To every people, nation and language in the whole land. Longest address list I’ve ever written.

Darius the Mede@darius.the.mede

Letter going out to every nation in my kingdom. Everyone is to tremble before the God of Daniel. He is the living God, and his kingdom will never be destroyed. He rescued Daniel from the lions.

Someone in Babylon@babylon.local

Replying to @darius.the.mede

Not long ago the decree was pray to nobody but the king. Now the king is telling everyone to tremble before Daniel’s God.

Centuries later, Hebrews lists people who trusted God, and one line is just this: they shut the mouths of lions. This is the night it means.

The writer of Hebrews@hebrews.writerWhat more can I say? I’d run out of time telling you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets. People who shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, and were weak and made strong.
The book of Daniel@bookofdaniel

So Daniel did well in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

Replying to @bookofdaniel

Cyrus the Persian. Keep an eye on that name. In his first year, he sends an announcement round his whole empire: the LORD’s people can go home and rebuild his house in Jerusalem.

Daniel serves on into the reign of Cyrus the Persian. The rest of his book is what he saw in visions.
