Weren't our hearts burning the whole time he was talking to us on the road?

Our hearts were burning.
I was walking home to Emmaus with Cleopas the Sunday after the crucifixion. A stranger joined us on the road. Luke never wrote my name down, and that's all right.

So we told him. All of it. Jesus of Nazareth. The chief priests handed him over. Crucified. We’d hoped he was the one who’d set Israel free. And now some women say the tomb’s empty and angels told them he’s alive.
