Seen.

Egyptian. I was Sarai’s servant, and she gave me to Abram so she could have a family through me. When I got pregnant, it all went wrong between us, and I ran. By a spring in the desert, the LORD found me. I named him the God who sees me. My son is Ishmael, which means God hears.

Abram told her I was hers to deal with. She treated me so harshly I ran away.

Ran into the desert. Pregnant. By a spring, the angel of the LORD found me, and he knew my name. He told me to go back. And that I’d have a son, and call him Ishmael, because the LORD has heard my misery.

You are the God who sees me.

Hagar@hagar · Desert of Beersheba

Sent off at dawn with some bread and a skin of water. In the desert the water ran out. I put my boy under a bush and went and sat about a bowshot away, because I couldn’t watch him die. And I cried.

God heard the boy. “Don’t be afraid, Hagar.” Then he opened my eyes, and there was a well. Second time in a desert with nowhere to go. Second time he found me.

God was with my boy as he grew up. He became an archer, out in the desert of Paran.
