My husband Elkanah has two wives. Every year we go up to Shiloh to worship, and every year Peninnah makes sure I know she has children and I don’t. Every single year. I end up crying and can’t eat.

Asked God for him. Gave him back.
From Ramah, in the hill country of Ephraim. Married to Elkanah. For years I had no children, and his other wife made sure I never forgot it. Then I prayed at Shiloh so hard the priest thought I was drunk.

Went to the house of the LORD and wept. Told him: if you’ll look at me and give me a son, I’ll give him back to you. His whole life.

The priest thought I was drunk. My lips were moving and no sound was coming out. Told him no, not a drop. I was pouring my heart out to the LORD.

It’s fine. You told me to go home and stop worrying, and hoped God would give me what I’d asked for. I actually ate something after that.
Took him up to Shiloh today. He’s still so little. I prayed for this boy, and the LORD gave him to me. So now I’m giving him to the LORD, for as long as he lives.
