Locusts first. Then the Spirit.

Joel son of Pethuel. A prophet in Judah. I don't say which king. What I do say is that the locusts came, wave after wave, and ate everything, and I told the whole country to come to the temple and cry out to the LORD. Tell your children about it. Make them tell theirs.

Elders. Everyone. Has anything like this ever happened in your lifetime? Or your parents'? Tell your children. Make them tell theirs. What one swarm of locusts left, the next swarm ate. What that one left, the next ate. And what that one left, the last one finished off.

Honestly, it's the joy that's dried up. For everyone.

Call a fast. Call everyone together. Elders, everyone who lives in the land, to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to him.

Blow the horn in Zion. It's coming. Like dawn spreading over the mountains, a huge army, like nothing before and nothing after. In front of it the land is like the garden of Eden. Behind it, desert.

They charge like soldiers. Nobody jostles anybody, every one keeps its line. Up the city wall, running along the top of it, into the houses. In through the windows like thieves.

Even now, the LORD says, come back to me with all your heart. Fasting, crying, grieving. Tear your hearts, not your clothes. Come back to the LORD your God. He's gracious and compassionate, slow to get angry, full of love, and he holds back from sending disaster.

Moses@moses · Mount SinaiThe LORD passed in front of me, calling out his own name. Compassionate and gracious. Slow to get angry. Overflowing with love that doesn’t quit, and faithfulness. Forgives wrongdoing, but never lets the guilty off.

Get everyone. The old people, the children, the babies still feeding. Even the bride and groom. Come out of the wedding room.

And the LORD was jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. He's answered: grain, new wine and oil, and plenty of it.

He'll pay us back for the years the locusts ate. That's what the LORD said.

Don't be afraid, land. Be glad. The pastures are going green, the fig tree and the vine are giving their best. Autumn rains and spring rains, like before.

And after that, the LORD says, I'll pour out my Spirit on everyone. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions. Even the servants, men and women.

Crowds and crowds in the valley of decision. The day of the LORD is near.

Joel@joel.son.of.pethuel

One day the mountains will drip with sweet wine and the hills will flow with milk. Every stream in Judah running with water, and a spring flowing out of the house of the LORD.
