Moses is dead. And the LORD turns to Joshua, Moses' right-hand man: get up, and take all these people over the Jordan.

The book of Joshua

Across the river, and what happened next.
The story of how Israel crossed the Jordan and came into the land. An old Jewish tradition says Joshua wrote most of it himself, and parts of it read that way. But some of it clearly comes later: it tells of Joshua’s death and burial, and it keeps saying things are still there “to this day”. So think of this account as the book itself, told by Joshua and by whoever finished it after him.

Joshua quietly sends two men over the river from Shittim. Go and look at the land, he tells them. Especially Jericho.
One man kept something back from Jericho. Nobody knows yet. The LORD does, and he's angry with Israel.
And it did. For about a whole day. There's never been a day like it: the LORD listened to a man.
Sun, stand still over Gibeon. Moon, over the Valley of Aijalon. Then the north: an army as big as the sand on the beach, more horses and chariots than anyone could count. Joshua attacks by surprise at Merom, and the LORD gives them to Israel.
It isn't quick. Joshua fights these kings for a long time. Thirty-one of them. Then the land has rest.
Cities of refuge. Kill someone by accident and you can run to one, and they won't hand you over to the dead man's family when they come after you. You stay until your trial, and until the high priest dies. Then you can go home.
The eastern tribes head home and build a huge altar by the Jordan. The rest of Israel gathers at Shiloh to go to war with them.
Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, dies at a hundred and ten. Israel served the LORD all his life.
And Joseph's bones, carried up from Egypt, are buried at Shechem. He made them promise. They kept it.
While she was telling them this, the two spies were up on her roof, hidden under the flax she’d laid out to dry.
Yes, two men came to my place. No idea where they were from. They left at dusk, just before the gate shut, and I don’t know which way they went. If the king’s men hurry, they’ll catch them. Before the spies lie down for the night, Rahab goes up on the roof. She tells them she knows the LORD has given them this land. Everyone in Jericho has heard about the sea, and nobody has any courage left. Then she says it: the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. A woman in Jericho.

Then she asks them to swear by the LORD that they’ll spare her family: her father and mother, her brothers and sisters, and everyone who belongs to them. They say: our lives for yours.

She lets them down the wall on a rope through her window. Her house is built into the wall. Before they go, they tell her: tie a red cord in this window, and get your whole family inside the house.
The LORD tells Joshua he has handed Jericho over to him, its king and its fighting men. And tells him how.

1. Every fighting man marches round the city, once a day, for six days. 2. Seven priests with seven rams’ horns go in front of the ark. 3. Day seven: seven times round, priests blowing the horns. 4. A long blast on the horn, and everyone shouts. 5. The wall of the city falls down.
