The walls of Jericho

Two spies on a roof, a river that stops for the priests’ feet, and six days of marching round a city without a word, told by the people on both sides of the wall.

How Story is made

Shittim, across the river

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal · Shittim

If you’re just joining: Moses is dead, the thirty days of mourning are over, and Joshua’s in charge now. We’re camped at Shittim, on the east bank of the Jordan. Jericho’s just over the river.

The Israelites@theisraelitesThe thirty days are over. We’re listening to Joshua now. Moses laid his hands on him, and he’s full of wisdom. We do what the LORD told Moses.
Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

Right. Officers going round the tents: get your food ready. In three days we cross the Jordan.

Born in the desert@born.in.the.desert

Replying to @inthecamp.gilgal

Cross it how? It’s harvest. The river’s literally over its banks.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

Joshua’s sent two of the young men off somewhere. Quietly. Nobody’s saying where.

Born in the desert@born.in.the.desert

Replying to @inthecamp.gilgal

Over the river, obviously.

That night, in Jericho

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local · Jericho

Harvest time in Jericho. Flax laid out to dry on the roofs.

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Everyone in Jericho has heard about this. Their God dried up the sea for them when they left Egypt. And more recently, Sihon and Og, the two kings over the river. Now they’re camped right across from us. Nobody’s got any nerve left.

The Israelites@theisraelitesThe sea has split. There’s a way through the middle. Dry ground.
Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Did you hear? Two strangers came into the city tonight and went to Rahab’s, the house built into the city wall. Someone’s told the king. They’re Israelites. Spies.

One of the king’s men@kingsman.jericho

Replying to @jericho.local

By order of the king, we are proceeding to her door.

One of the king’s men@kingsman.jericho

At Rahab’s. She states that they have already left.

One of the king’s men@kingsman.jericho

Replying to @kingsman.jericho

Now pursuing them down the road to the fords of the Jordan.

Rahab@rahab.of.jericho

Yes, two men came to my place. No idea where they were from. They left at dusk, just before the gate shut, and I don’t know which way they went. If the king’s men hurry, they’ll catch them.

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Gate’s shut behind the king’s men. Nobody else in or out tonight.

The book of Joshua@book.of.joshua

While she was telling them this, the two spies were up on her roof, hidden under the flax she’d laid out to dry.

Rahab@rahab.of.jerichoYes, two men came to my place. No idea where they were from. They left at dusk, just before the gate shut, and I don’t know which way they went. If the king’s men hurry, they’ll catch them.
The book of Joshua@book.of.joshua

Before the spies lie down for the night, Rahab goes up on the roof. She tells them she knows the LORD has given them this land. Everyone in Jericho has heard about the sea, and nobody has any courage left. Then she says it: the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. A woman in Jericho.

The next morning, in Jericho

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

There’s a red cord hanging out of one of the windows in the wall this morning. Rahab’s.

Three days later

One of the king’s men@kingsman.jericho

Three days searching the road to the fords. No sign of them anywhere. We have returned.

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Replying to @kingsman.jericho

Two blokes don’t just vanish.

The other spy@spy.two.jericho · Shittim

Back across the river. Three days hiding in the hills first, till they gave up looking for us.

The other spy@spy.two.jericho

Replying to @spy.two.jericho

Told Joshua everything. The LORD really has handed us the whole land. They’re terrified of us over there.

Forty years ago, twelve scouts came back from this land. Ten said the cities were walled and huge and it couldn’t be done. Joshua was one of the two who said it could. This time he sent two.

One of the ten scouts@scout.ten.oneOkay, it really does flow with milk and honey. But the people are strong, the cities are massive and walled, and we saw Anak’s descendants there.

At the Jordan

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal · Jordan River

Up early. The whole camp’s packed up and moved from Shittim down to the river. We’re camped on the bank.

Born in the desert@born.in.the.desert

Replying to @inthecamp.gilgal

Up close it’s even worse. Wide, fast and over the banks. Lowkey terrifying.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

Officers again. When you see the priests carrying the ark, the gold chest of God’s agreement with us, follow it. But stay about a thousand yards back. We’ve never been this way before, and that way everyone can see where it’s going.

Get yourselves ready and set apart for the LORD today. Tomorrow he’s going to do amazing things among you.

The priests carrying the ark go first. The moment their feet touch the water, the river will be cut off. It’ll pile up in a heap.

A priest carrying the ark@priest.carrying.the.ark

Replying to @joshua

Our feet. Right.

One more thing. Pick twelve men, one from each tribe.

Crossing day

A priest carrying the ark@priest.carrying.the.ark · Jordan River

The river’s in flood. We walked in with the ark on our shoulders, our feet touched the edge of the water, and it stopped. It just stopped.

Someone in Adam@someone.at.adam · Adam

Is anyone else seeing this? I’m in Adam, a long way up the Jordan. The river’s stopped flowing here. It’s backing up. Piling up in a heap.

Someone in Adam@someone.at.adam

Replying to @someone.at.adam

Still piling up.

Standing in the middle of the riverbed with the ark. We don’t move till the last one of them is over.

I was a boy when we walked through the sea. Never thought I’d do it twice.

Miriam@miriamWalls of water. One on the right, one on the left. And we’re walking between them.
Born in the desert@born.in.the.desert

Replying to @remembers.the.sea

I’ve heard about the sea my whole life. Now I get it.

Our families and herds stay on the east side, like Moses agreed. But our fighting men crossed first, armed and ready, to help the rest of Israel. About forty thousand of us, with half the tribe of Manasseh.

Now I know what I was picked for. Back out to the middle of the riverbed, where the priests are standing, and pick up a stone. On my shoulder.

One of the twelve stone carriers@twelve.stonesPicked. No idea what for yet.

Replying to @twelve.stones

Twelve of us, twelve stones, one for each tribe. We carry them to wherever we sleep tonight.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

Joshua’s set up another twelve stones in the middle of the riverbed, right where the priests’ feet were.

A priest carrying the ark@priest.carrying.the.ark

Joshua told us to come up. Last ones out. The second our feet touched the bank, the river came back. Over the banks again, same as before.

Someone in Adam@someone.at.adam

And it’s gone. All of it, off downstream like nothing happened. Wild.

Someone in Adam@someone.at.adam · AdamIs anyone else seeing this? I’m in Adam, a long way up the Jordan. The river’s stopped flowing here. It’s backing up. Piling up in a heap.

Tenth day of the first month. We’re camped at Gilgal, on the Jericho side of the river. We’re in.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @inthecamp.gilgal

Forty years. We’re in.

I remember how everyone looked at Moses. That’s how they look at Joshua now.

Gilgal

Joshua son of Nun@joshua · Gilgal

Twelve stones from the river, set up here at Gilgal. One day your kids will ask what they mean. Tell them: Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.

The LORD dried up the Jordan for us the way he dried up the sea for us forty years ago. So everyone on earth knows how strong his hand is, and so we’ll always fear him.

The Israelites@theisraelitesThe sea has split. There’s a way through the middle. Dry ground.
Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

They crossed. With the river in flood. Every king from here to the coast has heard about it, and nobody’s got any fight left.

A guard on Jericho’s wall@jericho.wall.watch

Replying to @jericho.local

You can see their camp from the wall.

Passover at Gilgal

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal · Gilgal

Passover tonight, the fourteenth. The first one in the land. On the plains of Jericho.

Replying to @inthecamp.gilgal

The night we left Egypt, we ate it dressed to travel. Sandals on, staff in hand. I was only little.

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

Flat bread and roasted grain today. Grown here. In this land.

Born in the desert@born.in.the.desert

Went out with the basket this morning, like every morning of my life. Nothing on the ground. The manna’s stopped.

Moses@mosesThey ate it for forty years.

Replying to @born.in.the.desert

Forty years. Every single morning, it was there.

Near Jericho

Joshua son of Nun@joshua · Jericho

Near Jericho today I looked up and there was a man standing in front of me, sword drawn. I went up to him and asked: are you for us or for our enemies?

Replying to @joshua

Neither, he said. He’s come as commander of the LORD’s army. I fell face down on the ground and asked what he wanted to tell me.

Show 1 more reply

Moses heard the same thing at a burning bush. Take off your sandals. Holy ground. Joshua was Moses’ assistant.

Moses@mosesGod called my name from inside it. Told me to take off my sandals, because the ground I was standing on was holy. I hid my face. I was afraid to look at God.

Jericho, shut tight

A guard on Jericho’s wall@jericho.wall.watch · Jericho

On watch on the wall. The gates are shut and barred because of the Israelites. Nobody goes out. Nobody comes in.

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Replying to @jericho.wall.watch

Their whole camp’s sat at Gilgal, right on our doorstep.

The book of Joshua@book.of.joshua

The LORD tells Joshua he has handed Jericho over to him, its king and its fighting men. And tells him how.

The book of Joshua@book.of.joshua

1. Every fighting man marches round the city, once a day, for six days. 2. Seven priests with seven rams’ horns go in front of the ark. 3. Day seven: seven times round, priests blowing the horns. 4. A long blast on the horn, and everyone shouts. 5. The wall of the city falls down.

And one rule from me. No battle cry. Not one word out of anyone. Not until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shout.

An Israelite soldier@soldier.at.jericho

Replying to @joshua

Walk round the city. Don’t say a word. Got it.

Day one

A guard on Jericho’s wall@jericho.wall.watch

Three days and I haven’t heard a single one of them speak.

Day four

The Israelites@theisraelites

Day four of walking round Jericho without a word.

Someone in Jericho@jericho.local

Jericho is burned. The silver, gold, bronze and iron go into the treasury of the LORD’s house. Of everyone in the city, only Rahab and her household come out alive.

Afterwards

Someone in the camp@inthecamp.gilgal

The LORD is with Joshua. His name’s all over the land now.

Rahab@rahab.of.jericho

Living among Israel now. Me and all my family.

Look closely at Matthew’s family tree. Salmon was the father of Boaz, and Boaz’s mother was Rahab. Boaz’s great-grandson is King David. And David’s line runs all the way to Jesus.

Matthew@matthewStarting with the family tree, because it matters. Abraham to David to the exile to Jesus: fourteen generations each. I counted.

Centuries later, Hebrews and James both bring her up. Hebrews: because she trusted God, she didn’t die with the ones who refused to obey. James: she was put right with God by what she did, taking the spies in and sending them off another way.

Rahab@rahab.of.jerichoI welcomed the spies as friends. So I didn’t die with the people who wouldn’t listen.

Rahab and her family live among Israel from then on. The rest of the book is Joshua.
