Prophet. Says what God says, even to the king.
A prophet in King David’s court. I brought David the best promise he ever heard, and the worst sentence. Later I made sure Solomon got the throne.

Go and do whatever you have in mind. The LORD is with you.
That night the LORD sent me back to David. He isn’t the one to build a house for the LORD. The LORD will build David a house: a son after him, and a throne that will last for ever.
I’m living in a house of cedar, and the ark of God is in a tent.Told the king a story. A rich man with huge flocks. A poor man with one little ewe lamb that slept in his arms like a daughter. A guest came, and the rich man took the poor man’s lamb.

He was furious. Said the man who did this deserves to die. So I told him: you are the man.

The LORD has taken away your sin. You won’t die. But the son born to you will.

The LORD loves him. The LORD says to call him Jedidiah: loved by the LORD.

I came in while she was still talking. Asked the king straight: did you say Adonijah would reign after you? Because he’s down there right now eating and drinking with the king’s sons and the army commanders, and they’re shouting long live King Adonijah. Me, Zadok, Benaiah and Solomon weren’t invited.

I told you a story about a rich man who took a poor man's only lamb. You were furious. Then I said it: you are the man.
Here’s a story. Two men in one town, one rich, one poor. The rich man has loads of sheep and cattle. The poor man has one little ewe lamb he’d bought. It grew up with his children. It ate off his plate, drank from his cup, and slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.

Then a traveller comes to stay with the rich man. He doesn’t want to use one of his own animals to feed his guest. So he takes the poor man’s lamb, and cooks that instead.

You are the man.
Then I told him what the LORD, the God of Israel, says. I made you king over Israel. I rescued you from Saul. I gave you his house, all of Israel and Judah, and if that wasn’t enough I’d have given you more. So why have you shown such contempt for what I said, and done this evil thing? You had Uriah the Hittite killed by the swords of the Ammonites, and you took his wife.

And the LORD says, because of this, violence will never leave your family. Trouble is coming against you from inside your own house. You did this in secret. What comes will happen in broad daylight, in front of all Israel.

But you’ve shown utter contempt for the LORD by doing this. The son who’s been born to you is going to die.

Word from the LORD about this one. The LORD loves him. He says to call him Jedidiah. It means loved by the LORD.
