A Hebrew in prison read my dream: three days and I’d be back serving Pharaoh. He was right. He asked me to remember him when I got out. I forgot. For two whole years.

Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer

I hand Pharaoh his cup. I forgot something.
Chief cupbearer to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, which means I serve his wine and I’m trusted with his life. I spent a while in prison after I offended him. A young Hebrew there explained my dream. Then I forgot about him for two years.

Today I had to own up that I’d forgotten him. I’m the one who told Pharaoh about him.
I offended Pharaoh. So did the chief baker. Now we’re both locked up in the prison at the captain of the guard’s house. Long story.
Mine: a vine with three branches. It budded, it blossomed, the grapes ripened. Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, so I squeezed the grapes into it and gave it to him.

The Hebrew says three branches, three days. In three days Pharaoh gives me my job back.
The baker had one too. Three baskets of bread on his head, and birds eating out of the top one. The Hebrew’s answer for him wasn’t a good one.
Three days later, Pharaoh’s birthday feast. And I’m back. Cup in my hand, into Pharaoh’s, like nothing ever happened.

For the baker too, it happened exactly the way the Hebrew said.
Bit awkward, this. I’ve had to own up to my mistakes today. Two years late, I’ve told Pharaoh about him. The young Hebrew in the prison who explained our dreams, and got them right.
Asked the cupbearer one thing. When it goes well for you, remember me. Mention me to Pharaoh. I was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and I’ve done nothing here to deserve a dungeon either.
