A sailor on the Tarshish ship

Deckhand. Seen a lot of storms. Not like this one.

Crew on a cargo ship out of Joppa. Phoenician by birth. I pray to my own god and I'm not fussy about whose god saves us, as long as one of them does.

  • Casting lots in the storm (Jonah 1:7)
  • Rowing for shore (Jonah 1:13)

Never seen a storm come up like this, and I've seen a few. Ship's about to break apart. Every guy on board is yelling to his own god, and we've dumped the cargo over the side to lighten her.

We drew lots to find out who's brought this on us. Came up him. So we asked him everything. What's your job? Where are you from? What country? Whose people are you?

We didn't. Not yet. We rowed as hard as we've ever rowed, trying to get back to land. The sea just got wilder.

So we prayed to his God. The LORD. Please don't let us die for this man's life, and don't hold his blood against us. You've done what you wanted. Then we threw him over. And the sea went still.

So we’re asking him everything. Whose fault is this? What do you do for a living? Where have you come from? What country? Who are your people?

It keeps getting worse. Asked him straight: what do we have to do to you to make this sea calm down?

We’re praying to his God now. The LORD. Please don’t let us die for taking this man’s life. Don’t hold his death against us. You’ve done what you wanted to do.
