Someone called my name in the night. Ran to Eli. He said he hadn’t called. Back to bed. Again. Same thing. Third time, Eli went quiet.

Speak. I’m listening.
Hannah’s son. She asked God for me, then brought me to Shiloh to serve him for life. I grew up in the house of the LORD under Eli. Prophet and judge. I say what the LORD says, whether you want it or not. I anointed Israel’s first two kings, and grieved over one of them.

What he told me would make anyone’s ears ring. It was about Eli’s family. Lay awake till morning, scared to tell him.

I did not like that. So I prayed.
What a king will do, since you asked: 1. Take your sons for his chariots. 2. Take your daughters to cook for him. 3. Take your best fields for his officials. 4. Take a tenth of your flocks. 5. Make you his slaves.
I’m old and grey. Whose ox have I taken? Who have I cheated? Who’s paid me to look the other way? Tell me.

That was foolish. You didn’t keep the LORD’s command. Your kingdom could have lasted for ever. Now it won’t. The LORD has already found a man after his own heart.
The LORD told me he regrets making Saul king. Saul has turned away from him and not done what he said. I cried out to him all night.

Apparently he’s been to Carmel to put up a monument to himself.
He greets me with “I’ve done what the LORD said!” Then what’s all this bleating of sheep I can hear?
