Guard duty. At sea.
Soldier in the Imperial Regiment, under the centurion Julius. Our job was to get a group of prisoners from Caesarea to Rome. Nobody said anything about a storm.

Sitting in a harbour on Crete. With winter coming.

The centurion’s going with the pilot and the owner. It’s their ship and their sea, to be fair.

Is there anything left on this ship we’re allowed to keep?

Nobody’s eaten for days. What’s the point.

He’s opened with “I told you so.”
Paul’s just come to the centurion and the lot of us. Said if those sailors don’t stay on the ship, none of us can be saved.

They weren’t letting down anchors. They’d lowered the lifeboat into the sea.

We’ve cut the ropes. The lifeboat’s gone. Drifting off in the dark.

Everyone did. It’s the first time I’ve seen anyone on this ship cheer up.

Headcount done. Prisoners, crew, all of us. Nobody missing.

The Twin Brothers. Sailors’ gods. Let’s hope they’re paying attention.
