A stranger at the town gate asked me for a drink of water. Then bread as well. I told him the truth: I’ve got a handful of flour in a jar and a drop of oil in a jug. I was picking up sticks to make one last meal for me and my son, so we could eat it and die.

One handful of flour. It never ran out.
A widow in Zarephath, a town that belongs to Sidon, not Israel. My son and I were down to our last meal in the drought when a stranger asked me for bread.

It didn’t. Every day there was enough, for him, for us, for the whole house.
My son got ill, worse and worse, until he stopped breathing. I asked Elijah what he had against me. Had he come to remind God of my sins and kill my son?

He brought him down to me. Look, he said, your son’s alive. Now I know you’re a man of God, and what the LORD says through you is true.
Out by the town gate picking up sticks, and a stranger asks me to fetch him a little water in a cup.

I’m on my way to get it and he calls after me. And a bit of bread, please.

Bread. I’ve got a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. That’s it. The sticks were to cook it for me and my boy. One last meal, and then we die.

He said don’t be afraid. Go and cook, but make him a small loaf first, then some for me and my boy. His God, the LORD, says the jar of flour won’t run out and the jug of oil won’t run dry until the day he sends rain.

I asked the prophet what he’s got against me. Did he come here to drag up my sins and kill my son?

My boy.

Rain. He said the flour and the oil would last until the day the LORD sent rain. They did.
