Fire on Mount Carmel

Three years without rain, one day on a mountain, and a whisper in a cave, told by the people who were there.

How Story is made

Samaria, in Ahab’s day

The books of Kings@booksofkings · Samaria

Before this one starts. Ahab is king of Israel, ruling from Samaria. He’s married Jezebel, a princess from Sidon up the coast, and taken up her god, Baal. No king of Israel before him has done this much to anger the LORD.

Someone in Samaria@samaria.local · Samaria

There’s a temple to Baal in Samaria now. The king built it himself. Altar inside, Asherah pole up as well.

Replying to @samaria.local

The queen keeps hundreds of Baal’s prophets. They eat at her table. Every day.

The day the rain stopped

Someone in Samaria@samaria.local

Replying to @ahabs.court

Who is that?

By the brook

The books of Kings@booksofkings · Brook Cherith

So Elijah disappears. The LORD sends him east, over the Jordan, to hide by a brook called Cherith. Water from the brook, and ravens bring him his food.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Breakfast by raven. Supper by raven. Bread and meat, both times.

Meanwhile, in Samaria

The king’s sent us out looking for Elijah. Every nation, every kingdom. Any that says he isn’t there has to swear to it.

Replying to @ahab.searchparty

Another kingdom. Another oath. He’s not there.

By the brook

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

The brook’s dried up. No rain anywhere, so of course it has.

The books of Kings@booksofkings

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

When the brook runs dry, the LORD sends him on to Zarephath, a town up the coast that belongs to Sidon. He’s told a widow there to feed him.

Zarephath

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow · Zarephath

Out by the town gate picking up sticks, and a stranger asks me to fetch him a little water in a cup.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

Replying to @zarephath.widow

I’m on my way to get it and he calls after me. And a bit of bread, please.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

Did what he said. His loaf first.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

Checked the jar this morning. Still flour. Still oil in the jug.

A neighbour in Zarephath@zarephath.nextdoor

Replying to @zarephath.widow

Hold on. The same jar? The one with a handful in it?

Show 1 more reply
A neighbour in Zarephath@zarephath.nextdoor · Zarephath

Right, so the widow down our street has a prophet from Israel living in her upstairs room. She was down to her last handful of flour. Now that house eats every day. Him, her, the boy.

Zarephath, later

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

My son’s ill. He’s getting worse.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

Replying to @zarephath.widow

He’s stopped breathing.

Show 1 more reply
The books of Kings@booksofkings

Upstairs, Elijah lays the boy on his own bed and cries out to the LORD. Has he brought this on the widow who took him in? Three times he stretches himself out over the boy. LORD my God, let his life come back into him.

The books of Kings@booksofkings

Replying to @booksofkings

The LORD heard him. The boy’s life came back into him.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow

He brought my son down the stairs and put him in my arms. Look, he said. Your son is alive.

A neighbour in Zarephath@zarephath.nextdoor

Replying to @zarephath.widow

Wait. Her boy? The one who stopped breathing?

The dry years

Someone in Samaria@samaria.local · Samaria

Another year. No rain. Not even dew on the ground in the mornings.

Fifty of us in this cave. Another fifty in a second one. The queen has been killing the LORD’s prophets. We’re the ones who got out.

Replying to @fifty.per.cave

Someone from the palace keeps us in bread and water. That’s all I’m saying.

Show 1 more reply

Back from another trip. No Elijah. Nobody’s seen the guy anywhere.

The third year

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Third year of the drought. The LORD has told me: go and show yourself to Ahab, and I’ll send rain. So I’m going.

Someone in Samaria@samaria.local · Samaria

The famine’s bad now. Really bad.

Ahab@king.ahab

Obadiah, who runs my palace, and I are going out ourselves. Every spring, every valley. If we can find some grass we can keep the horses and mules alive, and we won’t have to kill any of the animals.

Obadiah@obadiah.palace

Replying to @king.ahab

We’ve split the country between us. He’s gone one way on his own, I’ve gone the other.

Someone in Samaria@samaria.local

The horses. That’s what he’s worried about.

Ahab@king.ahabObadiah, who runs my palace, and I are going out ourselves. Every spring, every valley. If we can find some grass we can keep the horses and mules alive, and we won’t have to kill any of the animals.

On the road

Obadiah@obadiah.palace

Out on the road looking for grass, and who’s walking towards me. Knew him the second I saw him. Fell flat on my face. Elijah? Is that actually you?

Obadiah@obadiah.palace

Replying to @obadiah.palace

It’s me, he says. Go and tell your king Elijah’s here.

Show 5 more replies

Is that you?

Ahab@king.ahab

Went out to meet him myself. So it’s you, is it? Israel’s troublemaker.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Replying to @king.ahab

I’m not the one making trouble for Israel. You are. You and your father’s family. You’ve abandoned the LORD’s commands and gone chasing after the Baals.

Ahab@king.ahab

Orders have gone out. All Israel to Mount Carmel. The prophets too.

Replying to @king.ahab

The king wants all of us up on Mount Carmel. All four hundred and fifty. Something to do with Elijah.

Carmel, morning

Someone on Mount Carmel@carmel.crowd · Mount Carmel

People from all over Israel on Mount Carmel today. The king’s here. Hundreds of Baal’s prophets. And one man in a cloak.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite · Mount Carmel

How long are you going to keep limping between two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him. If Baal is, follow Baal.

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

Nobody said a word.

Show 1 more reply
Elijah@elijah.tishbite

I’m the only prophet of the LORD left. Baal has 450. So: two bulls. They pick one, cut it up, put it on the wood. No fire. I do the same with the other. They call on their god, I call on the LORD. The God who answers with fire is God.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

That’s fair. Do it.

Show 1 more reply

Our bull’s on the wood. No fire. Starting.

They’ve been shouting the same thing all morning. Baal, answer us! Baal, answer us!

Replying to @carmel.crowd

And dancing round the altar. Leaping, really.

Show 1 more reply

Carmel, noon

Noon. Nothing.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Shout louder! He’s a god, isn’t he? Maybe he’s deep in thought. Or busy. Or away on a trip. Maybe he’s asleep and someone needs to wake him up.

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

Asleep. He literally said asleep.

Carmel, afternoon

Afternoon now. They’re still going. Still shouting.

Nothing.

Replying to @baal.prophet

No answer. Nobody listening. It’s nearly time for the evening sacrifice.

Carmel, evening

Another on Mount Carmel@carmel.watcher · Mount Carmel

Elijah’s called everyone over. Come closer, he says. There’s an old altar to the LORD up here that’s been torn down, and he’s putting it back together.

Replying to @carmel.watcher

Twelve stones. One for each tribe.

Show 2 more replies

Wood on. Bull cut up and laid on the wood. Now he wants water.

Fill four big jars, he says, and pour them over the bull and the wood. So we did.

Replying to @carmel.watcher

Do it again, he says. So we did it again.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite · Mount Carmel

LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel: let them know today that you are God in Israel, that I’m your servant, and that I’ve done all this because you told me to. Answer me, LORD. Answer me, so these people know you are God, and that you’re turning their hearts back.

Someone on Mount Carmel@carmel.crowd · Mount Carmel

Fire. From the LORD. It’s burned up the bull. The wood. The stones. The dirt. It’s licked up the water in the trench.

Replying to @carmel.crowd

Everyone’s on their faces. Me too.

Show 3 more replies

Well. That answers that.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite · Mount CarmelHow long are you going to keep limping between two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him. If Baal is, follow Baal.

Elijah's servant@elijahs.servant · Mount Carmel

Elijah’s gone right up to the top of Carmel. Crouched down on the ground, face between his knees. He’s sent me to look out towards the sea.

Nothing there.

Fifth. Still nothing. Go back, he says.

Elijah's servant@elijahs.servant

Seventh time. There’s a cloud coming up out of the sea. Tiny. The size of a man’s hand.

Replying to @elijahs.servant

A cloud.

The rain

The sky’s gone black. Wind. And rain. Proper, heavy rain.

Replying to @carmel.crowd

Just standing in it.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widow · Zarephath

Rain. He said the flour and the oil would last until the day the LORD sent rain. They did.

The widow of Zarephath@zarephath.widowHe said don’t be afraid. Go and cook, but make him a small loaf first, then some for me and my boy. His God, the LORD, says the jar of flour won’t run out and the jug of oil won’t run dry until the day he sends rain.

The road to Jezreel

Ahab’s charioteer@drives.the.king

Driving the king down to Jezreel in this. And there’s a man running in front of the horses.

Delivered. He’s gone.

Replying to @samaria.local

I was there. On my face with everyone else.

The desert

The books of Kings@booksofkings · Beersheba

Elijah is afraid, and runs for his life. All the way south to Beersheba, in Judah. He leaves his servant there and goes on alone into the desert.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

A day’s walk into the desert. Sat down under a broom tree. I’ve had enough, LORD. Take my life. I’m no better than my ancestors.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Fell asleep under the tree. Someone touched me. An angel. Get up and eat, he said. By my head: bread baked on hot coals, and a jar of water. Ate. Drank. Lay back down.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

He came back and touched me again. Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.

Forty days

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Got up. Ate and drank. And that food carried me forty days and forty nights, all the way to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Horeb is where God gave Moses the law. Moses spent forty days and nights on this mountain too.

Moses@mosesAnother forty days. No bread. No water.

Horeb

Elijah@elijah.tishbite · Horeb

Found a cave on the mountain. Spent the night in it.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

The LORD asked me: what are you doing here, Elijah?

Show 1 more reply
Elijah@elijah.tishbite · Horeb

He’s told me to go out and stand on the mountain. The LORD is about to pass by.

Same mountain. The last time the LORD passed by someone here, it was Moses, tucked into a gap in the rock.

Moses@mosesNo one can see his face and live. So he put me in a gap in the rock, covered me with his hand as he passed, and let me see his back.
Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Wind. A huge one, tearing into the mountains, smashing the rocks. The LORD wasn’t in the wind.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Then an earthquake. He wasn’t in the earthquake.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Then fire. He wasn’t in the fire.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

And after the fire, a still, small voice. Barely a whisper.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

When I heard it I wrapped my face in my cloak and went and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

Same question: what are you doing here, Elijah? Same answer from me. I’m the only one left, and they want me dead too.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

He’s sending me back the way I came, to the desert near Damascus. Pour oil on Hazael and make him king of Aram. Do the same for Jehu, as king of Israel. And for Elisha son of Shaphat, to be prophet after me.

Elijah@elijah.tishbite

And I’m not the only one left. The LORD says he’s kept seven thousand in Israel who have never bowed down to Baal, never kissed him.

Replying to @elijah.tishbite

Seven thousand.

That’s Horeb. Elijah goes back the way he came, and finds Elisha out ploughing. The rest is 1 Kings.
