And then my voice came back. First thing I did with it: praise God.

Went quiet for nine months. Worth it.
Priest from the division of Abijah, which means twice a year my group takes its turn serving at the temple in Jerusalem. Married to Elizabeth for a long time. We prayed for a child for years. Then one day, in the temple, I got an answer and lost my voice in the same conversation.

You were all right, it was a vision. Nine months without a word, so here's what happened in there. An angel was standing by the altar. Gabriel. He said Elizabeth would have a son and we're to call him John. I asked how I could be sure. Wrong question. That's why I couldn't speak.
Anyone else at the temple this afternoon? The old priest Zechariah went in to burn the incense, and we were all outside praying, waiting for him. He was in there for ages. Like, ages. Then he comes out and he can't speak. Just making signs with his hands. Everyone's saying he's seen a vision in there. And you, my little boy, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You'll go ahead of the Lord to get the way ready. A new day is dawning from heaven, to shine on people sitting in the dark.
He's remembered his sacred promise. The one he swore to our ancestor Abraham.
And God swears an oath on himself: descendants like the stars in the sky and the sand on the beach, and every nation on earth blessed through them. All because Abraham did what he said.Replying to @abijah.priest

You were right. It was a vision. There was an angel standing by the incense altar. Gabriel, the one who stands in God’s presence. He said Elizabeth would have a son and we were to call him John. I asked how I could be sure. We’re old. I didn’t believe him, and that’s why I couldn’t speak till today.
He’s seen something in there. A vision. Look at him.Replying to @zechariah
He also said our son would never drink wine, would be full of the Holy Spirit before he was even born, and would turn many people back to God. He’d go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power of Elijah.
Praise the Lord, the God of Israel. He’s come to set his people free, the way he promised through the prophets long ago. He hasn’t forgotten the oath he swore to our father Abraham.
