How Story is made

1Loved before anything

It didn't start with anyone being good enough.

Moses@moses

He didn’t choose you because there were loads of you. You were the smallest nation there was. He chose you because he loved you.

Jeremiah@jeremiah

I have loved you with an everlasting love, he says. I’ve drawn you to me with kindness that won’t let go. I’ll build you up again. You’ll pick up your tambourines and go out dancing.

An exile in Babylon@exile.babylon

The LORD has abandoned me. The Lord has forgotten me.

Isaiah@isaiah

Replying to @exile.babylon

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast? Stop caring for the child she carried? Even if she could, he won’t forget you. He’s written you on the palms of his hands.

Zephaniah@zephaniah

Sing, Daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Be glad with all your heart, Jerusalem. The LORD has taken away your punishment. The King of Israel, the LORD, is with you. You’ll never fear harm again.

Zephaniah@zephaniah

Replying to @zephaniah

The LORD your God is with you, mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love. He will rejoice over you with singing.

John@johnzebedee

We love because he loved us first.

2The one who comes after you

Some of the most famous love in the Bible is love that wouldn't give up.

Hosea@hosea.son.of.beeri

The LORD told me: go and love your wife again. She's with another man and she's been unfaithful. Love her the way the LORD loves Israel, even though they keep turning to other gods. So I bought her back. Fifteen pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley.

Hosea@hosea.son.of.beeri

Replying to @hosea.son.of.beeri

Told her: you're going to live with me for a long time. No more other men. And I'll be the same with you.

Hosea@hosea.son.of.beeri

Israel ran off after other lovers and forgot him. And what does the LORD say he'll do? Win her back. Take her out into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her. Turn the Valley of Trouble into a door of hope.

Hosea@hosea.son.of.beeri

Replying to @hosea.son.of.beeri

You'll call me “my husband”, he says, not “my master”. I'll marry you for ever. In what's right and fair, in love and compassion. In faithfulness. And you will know the LORD.

Hosea@hosea.son.of.beeri

The LORD says: how can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? My heart is turned over inside me. All my compassion is stirred. I won't act on my burning anger. I am God, not a man. The Holy One among you.

Jesus@jesus

Lose one sheep out of a hundred, and you'd leave the ninety-nine and go after it. There's more joy in heaven over one sinner who turns back to God than over ninety-nine who don't need to.

A tax collector on the road@taxcollector.road

Replying to @jesus

Ninety-nine sheep, and he goes after the one. We're the one, aren't we.

Jesus@jesus

A man has two sons. The younger asks for his share now and blows the lot in a far country. Ends up feeding pigs, starving. Then he comes to his senses: I'll go home and tell my father I don't deserve to be called his son.

A tax collector on the road@taxcollector.road

Replying to @jesus

Feeding pigs. For a Jewish boy, you can't sink lower than that. And he was hungry enough to want what they were eating.

Jesus@jesus

While he's still a long way off, his father sees him and runs. Throws his arms round him. Best robe, ring, sandals, the fattened calf. “This son of mine was dead and is alive again. He was lost, and he's found.”

Replying to @jesus

No because the father doesn't even let him finish it. He gets as far as “I don't deserve to be called your son,” and the father's already shouting for the best robe.

Jesus@jesus

The older brother won't come in. All these years I've slaved for you. His father: “You're always with me, and everything I have is yours. But your brother was dead and is alive again. He was lost, and he's found.”

Replying to @jesus

Older brother here, and honestly? All those years working, never once a young goat to celebrate with my friends. I get him.

3Love that costs something

Jacob@jacob

Worked seven years for Rachel. They felt like a few days, I loved her that much.

Jacob@jacob · Haran

Seven years. The wedding feast. And in the morning: it’s Leah.

Laban@laban

Replying to @jacob

It’s not done round here, marrying off the younger before the firstborn. Finish the wedding week with this one, and you can have Rachel as well. For another seven years’ work, mind.

Ruth@ruthofmoab

Where you go, I'll go. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

Jesus@jesus

God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him won't perish but will have eternal life.

John@johnzebedee

Replying to @jesus

And he didn't send his Son to condemn the world. He sent him to save it.

Paul@paul

Hardly anyone would die for a good person. Maybe someone might dare to. But this is how God shows his love for us: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

4What it actually looks like

Less feeling, more doing.

Paul@paul

If I speak in the languages of people and of angels but don’t have love, I’m just a noisy gong. A clanging cymbal. If I have faith that can move mountains but don’t have love, I’m nothing.

Paul@paul

Love is patient. Love is kind. It doesn’t envy. It doesn’t boast. It isn’t proud. It isn’t rude. It doesn’t insist on its own way. It isn’t easily angered. It keeps no record of wrongs. It takes no pleasure in evil, but is glad about the truth. It puts up with everything, believes the best, keeps hoping, keeps going.

A believer in Corinth@corinth.believer

Replying to @paul

Reading this in a church where we take each other to court.

Paul@paul

Love, the short version: 1. Mean it. 2. Hate what’s evil. Hold on to what’s good. 3. Try to outdo each other in showing honour. 4. Celebrate with people who are celebrating. Cry with people who are crying. 5. Bless the people who persecute you. 6. As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Solomon@solomon

A bowl of veg with love beats a fattened calf with hatred.

Solomon@solomon

Hatred stirs up fights. Love covers over every wrong.

Jesus@jesus

A man is beaten by robbers on the Jericho road and left half dead. A priest sees him and walks past on the other side. So does a Levite. Then a Samaritan stops, bandages him, takes him to an inn and pays for his care.

Replying to @jesus

A priest walks past. A Levite walks past. And the one who stops is a Samaritan. Jews and Samaritans don't even talk to each other.

5He looked at him and loved him

A rich young man@whatdoistilllack

Asked him what I was still missing. He said sell everything, give it to the poor, and follow him. I went away sad. I have a lot.

Luke@luke

Dinner at a Pharisee's. A woman everyone in town knows as a sinner walks in with a jar of perfume. She's crying at his feet, wiping them with her hair, kissing them, pouring the perfume on them.

Simon the Pharisee@simonthepharisee

Replying to @luke

I shall own this one. I did not say a word aloud. I merely thought: if he really were a prophet, he would know what kind of woman is touching him. Next thing, he turns to me. Simon, I have something to tell you.

Jesus@jesus

Her sins, and there are a lot of them, are forgiven. That's why she's shown so much love. Whoever has been forgiven little loves little.

Simon Peter@simonpeter

After breakfast he asked me: Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Feed my lambs. Then again. Then a third time, and that one hurt. Lord, you know everything. You know I love you. Feed my sheep, he said.

Simon Peter@simonpeterEven if every one of them falls away, I won’t. I’ll go to prison with him. I’ll die with him.
John@johnzebedee

Replying to @simonpeter

Three times that night by the fire. Three times by this one.

6Love each other

Jesus@jesus

I'm giving you a new command: love each other. Love each other the way I've loved you.

John@johnzebedee

Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever doesn’t love doesn’t know God, because God is love.

John@johnzebedee

If you’ve got plenty, and you see a brother in need, and you shut your heart to him, how can God’s love be in you? Little children, let’s not love with words or talk, but with actions and truth.

John@johnzebedee

There’s no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear.

Paul@paul

God has chosen you and he loves you. So dress yourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Put up with each other, and if anyone has a complaint against someone, forgive. Forgive the way the Lord forgave you. And over all of it, put on love. It holds everything together.

7Nothing can separate us

Paul@paul

What can separate us from the love of Christ? Trouble? Hardship? Persecution? Hunger? Danger? The sword? No. I’m convinced: not death, not life, not angels, not rulers, not what’s happening now, not what’s coming, not any power, not height, not depth, not anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Replying to @lamentations

The LORD’s love is why we’re not finished. His mercies never run out. They’re new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

A psalmist@apsalmist

Give thanks to the LORD, because he's good. He made the skies. He made the sun to rule the day, and the moon and stars to rule the night. Every line of this song gets the same answer. You know it.

The Israelites@theisraelites

Replying to @apsalmist

His love lasts for ever.

The Shulammite@shulammite

Set me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. Love is as strong as death. Its flames are the fiercest fire of all. Floods can’t put it out. Rivers can’t wash it away. If a man offered everything he owned for love, he’d be laughed at.

Paul@paul

Faith, hope and love. These three remain. And the greatest of them is love.

You were loved first.
